Writer's Block: A Tip About Tipping

Nov 18, 2007 12:35

For a base tip, I usually figure leaving $1 for every $6 of the bill, rounded up.  So if  a bill is $15 for food and drink, I leave $3.  This comes to %16 to %23.  Then I may add or subtract a bit depending on how the service was.  If the server did a normal job, I won't add anything since what I'm leaving is usually a bit above the %15 anyway.  If the server was stupendous, I might add a dollar or two.  And in the rare instances it was terrible (very rare) I might subtract a dollar or three.

In only one instance I never tipped at all.  Waiter came around, took a drink order, never came back, had to WALK over to get him, then brought us food and never came back, had to ask the MANAGER for a bill.  And, needless to say, we left nothing.  And I hope he was at least yelled at for that display.

In one other case I was drinking with some friends at a TGI Friday's, and when we got the bill there was an extra beer on the bill.  We showed the waiter and said no one had a beer the whole time (we were drinking martinis), but he refused to take it off, saying "he remembered" the beer.  So, my friend Johnny wrote on the bill:  "Tip $5, minus one beer $4.95...new tip, five cents." and we left a nickle.

We didn't go back for a while after that! :P
