Fate is a river, and free will is the rocks you throw in it. My mother used to say that, and I am inclined to believe her.

While the current of 'fate' may be strong, it has many different paths it can take. And the rocks of 'free will', over time, can slow the flow, create a new path, or even stop it entirely.
