It's a powerful fantasy. Man has always been loath to accept his limitations. How much easier is it to deny the truth altogether - to imagine that nature has given us all the same potential, and that a single act of will can cause all limitations to vanish.
Everyone is not created equal. Everyone does not have the same potential, if only they would apply themselves. There is not a single person with a lower ability that does not believe that their limitations are due to only lack of effort or will.
As if nature were just. As if evolution hadn't designed us to compete with each other, so that only the strong would survive.
