Canon History
Little is known of the actual canon backstory of Karasu. All you are shown in manga and anime is that the Toguro Brothers needed him as a fighter on their team for the "Dark Tournament" and when he refused with Bui in a fit of pride and attacked them, they beat him to near-death and indentured him to their team anyway. Karasu hints that they killed someone he loved and this helped shape his outlook on killing what he loves now. One can assume he came from a well-off family, as he's a high class of demon and acts...quite aristocratic. He mentions that he is a Member of the Quest Class of Demons, meaning those who can manipulate the environment around them into forming their preferred weapons//abilities. Karasu's own abilities lie in bombs and explosives of all sorts. Even more frightening is that he does not need to touch someone for them to explode. As said in canon. "It isn't necessary for me to touch you...it's just one of the perks!"
It is vaguely hinted at early on that somewhere, Karasu had someone taken away from him, possibly by the Toguro Brothers. Whatever hurt him from his past hurt him, deeply, and the wound never did heal correctly. Anger and hatred swelled for the Toguro Brothers and when at last he died in the Dark Tournament he thought....he had found release, if at the hands of someone he had wanted as...his most beautiful victim.

First Journal:
deleteriouscrow Karasu's entry into the world known as "Purgatorium" was one that was wholly unexpected. Coming from the point of death as he had, he was amused and grateful, morbidly pleased with himself at somehow cheating death. The idea of atonement for sins meant nothing to him; he had been a sinner for decades, centuries perhaps (being in the mid 600's himself). He had no intention of truly atoning, because he simply wasn't sorry; felt no remorse for his actions.
His first meeting with another resident was Ichimaru Gin [
silverrkitsune]. They only talked sparsely, and Karasu was uninterested in pursuing the conversation to great length.
One of his next acquaintances was a man named Zack Fair [
zacked], a SOLDIER who seemed unafraid of Karasu, and more than willing to offer him information, and (far more precious and amusing) aid in whatever he needed. His upbeat demeanor was something Karasu was mildly intrigued by, finding it more than a little stupid that someone would be so trusting and eager to help everyone. Karasu did enjoy conversing with Zack though, and respected that while Zack disagreed with him, he was respectful in his beliefs. It was a welcome change of pace from what he was used to.
Notably different was his acquaintanceship with one Kurudo Akabane [
doctor_kuroudo], someone far closer to himself in personality. They had an amusing rivalry, one always trying to outdo the other. It was a way for Karasu to keep himself combat-ready, fighting Akabane, the two of them once manging to slay the other at the same time, dying together. Karasu was fond of Akabane in his own way (though more than often irritated at the gall of a human attempting to stalk him), but refused to allow himself to be possessed by the other. There was a friendship of sorts there, and while Karasu wasn't fool enough to trust Akabane, he knew precisely what he was dealing with in the human, and took comfort in that.
Karasu also took to a man named Zoisite [
the_gilded_one]. A flighty, pretty creature with enough wit and snark to keep Karasu's interest from wandering towards blowing his body to pieces. Another friendship of sorts, Karasu enjoying the change of pace from Akabane, and the selflessness of Zack. He was fond enough to give Zoisite a pet name, his Gilded One, for the gold of his hair. In turn, Zoisite seemed fond of him as well, and somehow, it was likely he was one of Karasu's first "friends" even if he still didn't fully trust the other.
By the 22nd of August, Karasu had run up against a pretty little girl by the name of Haruhi Fujioka [
the_new_host]. To this day, Karasu cannot say what it was about her that made him so fond, but there was something about her that warmed him. He was pleasant, snarky but...mostly kind to her when he talked to his "lambling." She seemed determined to prove that she would be his friend, though little did she know one of her associates from her world, a man named Kyouya had decided to question Karasu on his methods of loving someone. This lead to a rather...messy sort of kiss, and Kyouya dead and Karasu unfulfilled. But his pride was intact and he continued on with his life there. Playing with Akabane here and there, snarking with others...stalking another from little Haruhi's world (purely for the fun of his reactions), one Suoh Tamaki [
true_drama_king]. His reactions of terror to Karasu's words were a delicious thrill, and the part of Karasu that enjoyed being a bully and frightening others was pleased by the way Tamaki reacted perfectly to every little setup and play of words (not to mention that in having murdered Kyouya once already simply to prove a point, he was more than capable of doing it again with the pretty blonde if he wasn't careful).
His relationship with Akabane deepened in a manner, with each taking on the role or predator or prey, back and forth. Akabane was relentless in his desire to be the dominant predator, and Karasu (in a hypocritical manner) refused to allow himself to be the prey; disliking (and yet also on some level enjoying the attention of) the stalking. However, it was Yue [
evanescent_moon] who captured Karasu's attention by September, being the first one he was truly attracted to. Yue was an odd creature, however, refusing to show fear before Karasu, and even standing up to him often. Time and again he rejected Karasu's advances, and had the strength to protect himself, causing Karasu's infatuation to grow, along with his frustration. They talked more, Yue becoming the "Persephone" to his "Hades" more often than not. Someone Karasu eventually ended up opening up to. With time, they become lovers, but there was little to tie them together. Yue was a righteous figure, disgusted with himself for being with a demon, and Karasu was determined to prove Yue wrong, while at the same time fighting with who he was and what he wanted to do to fulfill his own ingrained psychological needs to self-sabotage his relationship by murdering Yue.
He never did murder Yue, and while at times they got along well, it was a thin, careful line. Karasu could not change his nature, or what he was: a demon. Yue constantly spoke against his nature, and in turn Karasu retreated into himself, brooding, attacking others to keep from harming his Angel, and of course proving Yue right when the Angelic creature found out what he had done. No matter what he did, it did not seem good enough (in his mind) for Yue. For every kind deed Karasu performed, he balanced it with a horrific act elsewhere because he needed an outlet of some sort to keep the emotions and hostilities from building up. In a way, Karasu really was childish, unable to hold onto his emotions and control them when it really counted.
During this time with Yue, Piiko-chan [
piiko-chan] arrived. A small child, a minature of Karasu completely, having his face, his scent...but his nature was too sweet, too stupid. Karasu took him in out of not knowing what else to do with the boy (though murdering him crossed his mind more often than once). Yue disapproved of the child that called Karasu "Daddy" and Karasu was rarely the best of parents. Protective should others threaten the boy, otherwise he often left him to his own devices. Piiko was given what he needed, what he wanted, doted on now and then...but otherwise Karasu went about his own devices, namely stalking Yue, and attempting to convince the haughty angel that they were destined to be together. It never stopped Piiko from caring or wanting to be near his father, and in some manner, they made it work. Karasu never truly appreciated Piiko while he was there, but upon the boy's disappearance and returning home, he admitted in his own way that he mourned his loss, namely by leaving his room untouched, keeping the stuffed fox toy he had bought him for Christmas as a memento.
Yue left Purgatory on December 3rd, 2007. Karasu was devastated in a sense. Someone he had put trust in had only gone and proved him right: trusting in people, not killing them yourself led only to them leaving you on your own. Once more he was alone, and angry. He no longer trusted Yue, and swore to Piiko in that time that they would no longer accept the other should he return. And Yue did return, with no memory, which was a slap in the face to the proud demon who strove to be remembered by those around him. Everything was undone, and Karasu was too angry to see reason in Yue's pleas that they start over on new, solid ground. It took time and patience on the new Yue's part, but slowly Karasu allowed the other in to some extent, letting Yue babysit Piiko while the child was there, leaving him free to prowl the city or do the odd job for Medea on the rare occasion the goddess needed something done.
It was on December 29th, 2007 that Karasu and Kimimaro [
bone_pulse] grew closer. During an event that inverted personalities, Karasu was captured and rather forcibly seduced by the bone shinobi, as a sort of substitute for Orochimaru. Upon coming out of the event, their personalities normal, Kimimaro swore himself to Karasu as a means of making up for what he had done to the crow demon, and somewhat mollified at having his own bodyguard and servant, Karasu obliged him. Kimimaro proved to be an intense watchdog in guarding Karasu, making up for any wrongs that were brought against the other, and eventually bringing Juugo [
wearsacurtain] with him into the fold when he arrived. In a haste to keep the two for himself once Orochimaru himself arrived, Karasu killed them both, spending the night curled up between them, rolling in their blood. Their forgotten memories of Orochimaru allowed them to focus on Karasu, acting loyal only to him and themselves. With Kimimaro's patience, Karasu slowly began to attempt to trust once more, frustrated with the lack of permanence murder in Purgatory allowed. Through it, he kept close to Yue as well, using him in a manner of babysitter and semi-confidant in the event that Kimi was unavailable.
When the fires came, and the Upper Level began to deteriorate, however, he lost everything.

vanitynightmare First day in World's End: May 19th, 2008
When Karasu awoke from the destruction of Purgatory from the ascent of the new gods, he was alone. He was in the church, where he had last been before being knocked unconscious. Above him was a cage of bones, much like the ribs of some sort of giant, protecting him from the debris. Kimimaro had used all of his energy in saving him, and did not reawaken as a few others did. For a day or so, Karasu remained there, depressed and hollow at the loss of Kimimaro and Juugo, withdrawing into himself once more at losing people he had grown to feel affection for. He didn't eat (except Kimimaro's heart) or move from his flimsy prison, sleeping beneath those bones and curling up near the cold, lifeless body of his former lover. When he finally emerged, it was do to Yue's worried urgings, but for months afterward Karasu was quiet and sullen, refusing to speak with anyone overlong and hiding away in the church that he saw as his safe haven. Some part of him was afraid to leave it, to leave anything of Kimi's behind.
When he finally did though, it was because of one Genesis Rhapsodos [
lastrhapsodos]. Something about the man sparked life in him once more, drawing him out of the depression that had overtaken him for so long. He was grateful in a sense, and at the same time, the old urges against Kurama were re-awakend. He would not lose someone again. Not on their terms. He wanted Genesis, but more, he wanted to prove that no one would get away with hurting him again. He attempted to woo Genesis, off put by Angeal Hewley [
tenshinoyobu], who seemed to realize (along with Sephiroth [
tenshinosairin]) that Karasu was a dangerous, mentally unbalanced creature. The Crow demon was dangerously obsessed with Genesis, who continued to flirt and play with his feelings, even while defending him to others. It was a sign to him, and surely as you please, he managed to kidnap the SOLDIER, murdering him time and again until he no longer remembered who Angeal or Sephiroth (or hardly himself) were. Thrilled at this change in events, and feeling once more ontop of his feelings, Karasu planted the thoughts in Genesis's mind that they were lovers, secretly, and Genesis followed along, remaining with him, defending him yet again from those who were convinced he was a murder.
Angeal saw through it, however, and was granted a wish, using it to turn Karasu into a child, "innocent" of his crimes. Put off by what had happened, and still hating Karasu as he did, Angeal couldn't leave him alone, and took him in, caring for him. The demon was indeed innocent of his crimes to World's End, sweet-tempered and shy, if lonely and ready to cling to Angeal for guidance and protection. If a little reluctantly, Angeal was his guidance, aided by the elf, Avari [
asouroldelf].
When Karasu regained his true form, he couldn't bring himself to hate Angeal. Somewhere, in the rather twisted honor code he kept for himself, he respected Angeal for having the cunning to beat him temporarily, as well as for protecting him when others, such as Sephiroth, might have murdered him without a thought. For that, he promised to never harm Angeal himself. It caused an awkward rift between the two however, and even after Angeal made Karasu confront Genesis, and the other continued to stay at his side, things were...awkward.
And only grew as the Remnants stole his church from him, murdering his crows and taking Genesis as their own brother, driving him insane to a level that even Karasu was disturbed. It was a sickening madness that even Karasu couldn't stand to be around, and when Angeal and then Genesis left, he was all but alone once more, promising to at the very least look after Nero the Sable [
couldbeincest]. During this time, Kimimaro [
bone_pulse] returned, remembering Karasu and placing himself at his side once more. When Angeal did return, and remembered him, Karasu was thrilled...and then sullen at receiving such a cold welcome. He hadn't forgotten what he had done, raping and murdering his former lover, Genesis, but all Karasu saw was someone who provided him with a stability no one else could achieve. It wasn't for long however, and Kimimaro left once more, and in a suicidal fit at losing him once more (at having his trust betrayed again), a heartbroken Karasu blew up the home he had shared with Kimimaro and Nero, almost killing himself due to the concrete rubble in the process. He was rescued and resuscitated, and soon after, Angeal made the decision to move in with him and Nero, keeping the pair of them steady, deciding that they needed him. Karasu turned his fondness onto Angeal against his own will, remembering his promise to never harm him, but finding it hard to trust him at the same time. It has been a slow courtship, Karasu professing his love, as he is wont to do, and Angeal forcing him to wait and examine his feelings time and again.
And that is where they leave off, remaining as a family unit of sorts with Nero in World's End, Angeal promising at last to give Karasu a chance with him. Perhaps against his better judgment. But it's a start.
