Miles hadn’t been that concerned to not see the boys in the morning. He had noticed their mess they had left out from the night before, and was highly tempted to clean it, but they had to learn somehow. If it wasn’t gone by the time he got back, he’d have a stern discussion with the two of them. If they wanted to stay up until the wee hours of the morning doing… whatever it was they did, that was fine, so long as they kept the place tidy.

It was once he’d gone outside he noticed something seemed… off. On his way to the library (which seemed to be his most common destination, lately) he noticed several children playing in the parks and roads, sometimes accompanied by persons he recognized, sometimes by themselves. Had the Fates really brought children here? That seemed unnecessarily cruel.

He was restless as he read at the library, and finally found he could not stomach the idea. He had to confront one of the Fates somehow and demand to know what their motivation was. But first, Miles felt obligated to inform his roommates of the situation. Perhaps together they could convince some of the children to be in their care; children alone were a disaster waiting to happen.

As he crossed through one of the parks to get back to his apartment, however, he saw something very strange. Some of the children had obviously found the playground, but one of them, sitting on the slide, was eating out of a package of cookies that Miles had sworn was left on the countertops by his roommates that morning. Perhaps Kazushi and Kenji were already aware? He slowly approached, the features of the child becoming more apparent as he neared.

No… It couldn’t possibly be…

“Kazushi,” Miles said gently, standing a few yards from the boy as to not startle him, yet nevertheless looking over the boy, trying to affirm his suspicion before the boy responded.

When Kazushi heard his name, he spun around. "Huh?"

There was a man standing outside of the playground. He looked kind of grumpy and he was wearing funny clothes. Kazushi's mommy had taught him not to laugh at other people who looked unusual, so he stifled a giggle and asked the stranger, "How did you know my name?"

Kenji slipped down the slide again and moved up to Kazushi's side, reaching to grab hold of his hand and yank him back a little. "Heyyy, didn't you say a little while ago tha' your mommmy said no talking to strangers?" He giggled, looking back up at Kazushi with a big grin.

"'e's a stranger. And funny lookin' too!"

With that, he could only burst out into laughter.

"How do you know his name, huh?"

Miles was not the sort of man to stammer. But as he stared at the two boys in front of him, he found he could not come up with an explanation. Both for why he knew their names, and why both of his roommates had been transformed in to children! Kazushi made a rather nondescript child, but Kenji… Miles would recognize that grin no matter the age.

… And Miles was not ‘funny looking.’ He was wearing a suit, it was hardly strange apparel. Sure, most children were not familiar with cravats, but it was similar enough to a tie.

“You awoke in my apartment,” Miles informed them. He motioned to Kazushi’s lap where the mostly eaten package of cookies sat. “Those were in my room, weren’t they? I’m going to take care of you. My name is Mr. Edgeworth.”

"Your apartment?" Kazushi muttered. He glanced down at the cookies. They sure had been yummy. They weren't the kind his mommy normally bought for him, but they had still tasted so sweet. This guy had good taste in cookies! He beamed up at this stranger and put out a hand for him to shake. "Hi, Mr. Edge-"

Wait. It all made sense now...

"Are you a kidnapper?" His asked suddenly, withdrawing his arm and taking a step backward. He had watched the news before. He knew what strange adults did to children. "Are you gonna murder us!?"

Kenji stared up at Edgeworth curiously for a moment. A murderer? Like on TV?

Somehow, he wasn't so sure. This guy didn't look like a murderer--just some big funny guy in a pink suit. Anyone dressed like that wasn't someone to be feared.

"He's not no murderer." He told Kazushi, "I think he's one of those dancing guys. He's got a lacy scarf and a pink suit."

He pointed to his cravat. "Dancers dont kill people."

Although Miles should have expected this sort of reaction considering the sort of stories the children must have heard about strangers, he nevertheless felt slightly affronted at being accused of such things.

“I am by no means a murderer, and I am certainly not a dancer. My suit is burgundy, not pink, and this is a cravat, not a scarf.” Miles took a deep breath as he looked down to the children, but he feared as he relaxed that, perhaps, he had come on a little too strong to them.

Miles sighed and neared them, squatting down to be closer to their level. That made them more comfortable, right? Miles wasn’t terrible with children, but something told him he’d have a bit of trouble with these two.

“I don’t mean to frighten you. Think of me as… your guardian. I will certainly ask to see why you are here, and help you return… home as soon as possible.”

‘Return to normal’ was what came to mind first, but Miles knew it wouldn’t make much sense to the boys.

"... You're our guardian?" Kenji asked steadily, glancing back at Kazushi with uncertainty. He was a little skeptical but... this guy probably had food and that was what was on his mind at that moment.

"... Are you going to feed us then?"

This was a very serious question. Kenji had perhaps had a single cookie from the bag that Kazushi had gotten--and that wasn't nearly enough to fill him up. He wanted REAL food--and as an adult, this guy had a job to do.

"I'm hungry. I want food. If you're not a dancing man, can you atleast make foods?"

"So you'll help me find my mommy and daddy?" Kazushi asked, glaring at Kenji. They had been kidnapped and all he could think of was food? What a jerk.

He looked up at Mr. Edgeworth. "I like your... crawl... vat?" he said quietly, and offered him a sheepish smile. "I want one too!"

Miles focused on Kazushi first - his inquiries were more serious. He paused as he thought of what to say - he couldn’t promise the return of their parents, after all, they were in a different plane of existence entirely.

“I will do everything I can to help you,” he assured him, reaching out to pat his shoulder reassuringly. He smiled a little at the ‘crawl-vat’ comment. Perhaps he had an extra somewhere he could lend the boy…

He then looked to Kenji. “Of course I will feed you. It is nearing time for lunch, isn’t it?” Miles stood and motioned back over toward the apartment complexes. “If you are finished playing, I can take you back and prepare you something to eat.”

"Woooo!" Kenji cheered, tossing his arms into the air, "Can we have soba?? I want... chocolate soba!"

He looked back at Kazushi with a big grin, "With... honey..." He added. And he wasn't about to take no for an answer.

The smaller boy reached up and took Miles' hand tightly in his own then reached for Kazushi's as well, "Lets go get food, food, FOOD!"

It didn't matter who this guy was... as long as he fed him something good.

Kazushi was reluctant about going with this stranger. Mr. Edgeworth seemed nice, but Kazushi's parents had always warned him about strangers like him. But he took Kenji's hand anyway, because as scary as this place seemed, it would be even scarier without him.

"I want chicken!"

Miles wrapped his fingers around Kenji’s small hand and smiled down to them. Something about the pair of them was terribly endearing. Miles knew in the back of his mind that they most likely wouldn’t remain that way for long, but for now, it was a pleasure to enjoy something as simple as that.

“I will do my best to satisfy the both of you,” Miles said as he led them away from the playground. Kazushi’s request of chicken seemed like the likely result of their meal - Miles was familiar with soba, but… chocolate?
