Doesn't get her down for long! )
He approached the little girl cautiously and knelt down in front of her.
"Are you okay, kid?"

He certainly wasn't a shinigami, lacking the uniform that would have made that immediately obvious, but his clothes were strange. They weren't like anything she'd ever seen before; Rukongai dwellers wore yukatas or kimonos like her own, not these strange things.
"I-I'm ok," she spoke up hesitantly, raising her gaze to his. "Just a little, well, lost."

Oh my god....
"M-Momo! You're small too!"

Maybe he was a friend of her grandmother? That would explain how he knew her, though she wondered how her grandmother would know someone like this.
What he said next took over that thought, though. "Too? Of course I'm small! I'm only 8!" she said, confused.

He hesitated, maybe it was just a girl who looked like her. "Um... Ya first name's Hinamori, right? An' ya a shinigami? Or wanna be, or somethin'?" He hoped he hadn't confused her at all.

"My last name's Hinamori." she corrected, then stared at him in startled surprise when he continued.
"I'm no shinigami!" Momo exclaimed, looking half frightened at the thought. "I could never be good enough..." she mumbled, before looking back up at him, sudden hope in her eyes. "Are you a shinigami? Can you help me get back home?" she asked quickly, her words running together. "Shirou-chan will be so worried about me!"
Reply
"So, wait, but I thought everybody in da shinigami world was a shinigami? Are dere humans dere too?"
He felt bad crushing her hopes, bu somebody had to do it. "Ah, no. Even if I was, I still couldn' get ay home. We're all stuck on Isola Di Sorte fa' now. Dere's a problem wid ya home, but it's gonna be fixed soon."
"Shirou-chan? Is dat ya sista'? She won' be worryin', time apparently doesn' more here or somethin' so it'll be like ya neva' left."

She shook her head, giggling softly at the absurdity of his statement. "Oh no! The majority of people are ordinary souls from Rukongai, like me." Momo explained. His friend musn't have explained things very well.
Momo had already kind of known he wasn't a shinigami with the ignorance he showed of her world, but she had clung to that last hope. "Oh." she murmured sadly, then gave him a curious look. "A problem? What sort of problem?"
She burst out laughing at what he said next. "Sh-Shirou-chan's-" Momo started, between giggles. "Shirou-chan's a boy!" She had heard the rest of the sentence, and she was relieved to hear that she wouldn't worry her grandmother or Shirou-chan, though the words only gave her more questions, but she was giggling so hard at the thought of Shirou-chan's face if he'd heard the stranger that she made no response to them.

"Eh, ordinary souls? Like, not human, but real?" He was starting to feel way out of his depth in this conversation. It was humbling having a small child laugh at your stupdity.
"I'm not sure exactly... Dat's what we gotta figure out. It was some sorta action or event dat took place soon before ya came here dat would mess up time an' all. Do ya rememba' anythin'?"
Her sudden outburst in laughter startled him. He was fine being laughed at, but was it really that funny? Maybe she was haing problems from being taken to a strange place. "Somebody told me dat '-chan' was for girls an' cute things. Do ya call him dat just ta bug him?" Old Momo didn't seem like the type to do that, but maybe she was a reformed brat or something. Little Momo wasn't that bad though, he had to admit, as he smiled at her laughter.

"Sure we're human!" she replied brightly. "Just dead. I think..." Momo shook that thought off; it was depressing and she didn't really understand it.
And now Firo had lost her again. She blinked at him for several moments, trying to make sense of the whole thing. "... The last thing I remember is playing tag with Shirou-chan." she said finally, still confused.
Momo bit her lip to try and calm down, still giggling occasionally. "Mm, not really. Chan can also be used for affection! And I love Shirou-chan veeeeery much!" Momo giggled again. "It does bug him a little, though."

"Dead? Dere's no way." He shook his head, that went against everything that had allowed him to accept his parents' deaths. "Once ya die ya disappear dat's it."
"From what I heard, it just snatches ya randomly. Sounds pretty dirty of it ta just take ya while ya playin.'"
"Is he ya brotha', den?" Firo smiled. She certainly was adorable.

"Oh no, that's not how it works at all!" Momo said confidently. "Obba-chan explained it all to me! When you die in the human world, you come to Rukongai and live out your... afterlife there." she struggled a little to remember some of it. "And then I think you go back to the human world later... It's a circle!" That bit she definitely remembered being told.
"So I got kidnapped?" she asked slowly, still not understanding at all what Firo was saying.
Momo smiled, though, when he asked that question. "Mm, sort of." she said softly, twisting her fingers together. "Shirou-chan lives with me and Obaa-san. Everyone gets put together in families, so we're not actually related, but he pretty much is my brother." she finished with a grin.

He stared at her for a long moment. He'd decided long ago not to believe in any afterlife and he didn't really want to start now. "But- Dat- no. Neva'mind." It would be pointless to argue and that wasn't a subject he wanted to start on with a little girl who seemed pleasant enough.
"Dat.. sounds like it'd be nice. Obaa-san is ya kinda parent person?"
