It's a quarter of eight, and I'm already back from the food bank with Mb. She picked me up just after six, we got there and were in line to register by 6:30...we ended up being numbers 530 and 531. One of the volunteers who circulates and takes prayer requests said that when she'd arrived at 6, they were calling number 200, and they're expecting 1300-1400 people today trying to get turkeys for Thanksgiving.
I told her I remember when I first began going there, that the average was 300-400 per week. Now, she says, it's regularly 1000 every week*. Wow.
Because of the overflow crowd, there was none of the usual selection process. We each got a brown bag with canned and boxed goods and a white bag with fruits/veg and bakery items. Finally was a choice of turkey (whole or breast), chicken or ham. I opted for turkey breast, because it's just me, after all. Mb, who's cooking for Bozo and BabyBozo, went for the whole turkkey.
It went pretty quickly, and we got back out to her car by 7:10. Upon examining the bags, I've discovered a big box of instant mashed potatoes, a good sized bag of real potatoes, a bag of plums, a box of stuffing mix, a packet of gravy mix, some Wheat Thin crackers, Nutter Butter cookies, cans of corn, beans, sweet potatoes and peaches. And a loaf of bread.
There was also a bag of almonds and a three-pack of caramel apples, both of which I traded to Mb for diet soda, because my teeth don't handle shit like that anymore.
I expect to have a quiet Thanksgiving day. Hope yours are pleasant as well!

* On normal weeks, they have eveyone grab three recycled grocery bags on the way in (if they havn't brought their own reuseables, like I do), which they are in perpetual need of. Yesterday evening, after Mb gave me the heads up, I collected the accumulation from my dining room and wound up with a very full 30 gallon trash bag full! My, that freed up some real estate....
