I just got back from a munchie run to WalMart. Had to snag a few nibbles for The Wedding...an Event like this demands something a cut above peanut butter and crackers. So I got some veggie cream cheese and a small beef summer sausage and some marked-down Easter goodies. Nomnomnom

Back to the fatherhood issue. It's one that applies to any situation (inc fanfic) where lineage is crucial. By the time you have DNA to test, it's too late to avoid a scandal. If Guinevere is a virgin, it eliminates the possiblity of having to admit the King has been cuckolded.
There'a also the pesky problem of what to do with a child of the Queen who is not royal. It's not like the old days, when you would tell the world it was stillborn and ship the kid off to be raised by your old nanny or a poor relation overseas. Nowadays, Gwenevere would most likely want the child at her side.
Arthur could formally adopt the baby and give it the title of Prince(ess), but the child could never inherit the throne (no adopted child can inherit a peerage). The next son or daughter to be born would be in line for the throne. There's no way the poor kid could escape the stigma and notoriety of being the kid who isn't really a prince(ess).
Much better for everyone all around if we know Gwenivere is a virgin.
