Wedding day jitters

Apr 29, 2011 02:12

I just got back from a munchie run to WalMart. Had to snag a few nibbles for The Wedding...an Event like this demands something a cut above peanut butter and crackers. So I got some veggie cream cheese and a small beef summer sausage and some marked-down Easter goodies. Nomnomnom ( Read more... )

I didn't stay up, but checked the news for the dress this morning. Gorgeous dress, and I'm so glad it has sleeves and a more modest neckline!

I thought it was very tasteful and classy...not to my personal taste, because it would make my hips look a mile wide, but that's just me. Lovely tiara, modest bouquet---I'm wondering about her shoes, although I might have nodded off during that bit. I'm too old to pull off 24 hour marathons any more!

I didn't see her shoes, but read this morning that they were hand-made of British materials by the same design house that made her dress.

British women tend to have smaller hips and bigger busts overall than American women, so the dress wouldn't have been flattering to anyone with some booty baggage. :D

SLEEVES being a key word here! So many modern brides opt for the strapless dresses and they are way too big to pull it off. I watched an episode of "Say Yes to the Dress- Plus Size" last night. ICK! One of the young women had to weigh 400 lbs or more- her arms were huge and she stuffed herself into a princess ball gown with no sleeves- it looked hideous. She kept saying she wanted to accentuate her curves- there were no curves, just lots of fat. She looked like a sausage.
I would think they'd have a little more pride- I never entertained the thought of strapless when I got married and I was a whisp of a girl back then. I don't even do sleeveless these days as I am so self-conscious about my arms.
Don't get me started on the brides who have LOTS of upper tattoos and chose their dresses poorly- it just looks trashy to me.

We were talking about her dress at lunch today, and my husband said he hoped it struck a blow for decorum in fashion, since so many young women now have only trashy TV on which to base their ideas of how to dress.

I've never done strapless either. Even back when I was in really good shape, it just wasn't me. And I'm so fair-skinned that the sight of my bare arms would blind onlookers, so that's out too.

Amen to dressing in a modest fashion. My youngest son is dating a young lady who dresses in what most would call a "hippie" fashion- longer skirts, cute peasant blouses, etc. I told him it was so refreshing to see a young lady actually dressing like a lady. She's petite and cute and I love her funky fashions. I am not a prude but it seems that things have really gotten out of hand.
My daughter was able to pull off the strapless/sleeveless wedding gown but she's a size 2 and tiny-
* Giggles on the fair-skinned blinding comment! I am with you- I figure if I don't want to see it in the mirror, I shouldn't object strangers to my bodily shortcomings. :)

It delights me to see young people nicely dressed. My son is a cute kid, but he tips over into downright handsome in a good blazer, dress shirt, pressed slacks, and a tie. :)

The past few years I've had an awful time trying to find nice blouses and dresses to wear to work because everything's cut down to 'there' or up to 'here.' Since I work for a priest, modest dress is a job requirement, and I could frequently find suitable clothes only in thrift shops because current fashion wasn't turning out anything I could wear.

As with the "gypsies and sluts go on a cruise" look? (That stuck with me for some reason.)

Exactly! They're still on that cruise, only now it's all varying forms of polyester. Yeesh.

I do see some things that are really cute and would fit me great except they're so darned short. (And considering I'm barely five fee tall, that's saying a lot.) Designers need to get it into their heads that not all of us have pencil legs and can get away with wearing a tunic that barely covers our underpants.

As they used to say at White Trash Queen, 30" long is a tunic, 31" is a dress.

I second that! Down with hoocie-mamas!

(Who the HELL *are* the Kardashians, and why am I supposed to give a damn about them?!)

I think they're people famous for being famous, if that makes any sense. With the advent of reality TV, there are a lot more folks like that running around.

Corgikid refers to all reality TV as "fertile, fat, filthy and short" since that seems to be the main themes of most of the shows. :-D

"fertile, fat, filthy and short"

Classic!

"Fit" is a concept that's difficult, especially when you're an uber-plus size. You're so happy just to find something you can get into that how flattering it is is a distant second. Or you go the other way and wear baggy clothes that make you look even bigger. I'm the exception; I'm fussy about my clothes, and I have a large andvaried wardrobe to prove it. (That gal who said she hadn't worn a dress in 20 years? My mind boggled. How DULL. I wear skirts and dresses a lot, but I also wear pants and shorts and I *do* own a pair of jeans. Variety!)

Being a tattoo afficianado myself, I'm only bothered if they're poorly done tattoos. I'm also of the opinion that the ONLY good reason for a backless dress is to show off a particularly spectacular backpiece.

I haven't done skirts or dresses in a couple of years due to the leg damage from the car accident. It's just too beat-up looking. Same reason I don't do shorts unless inside the house.
I tend to wear baggier clothes rather than tight ones- I can't stand things to feel snug. I've lost 10 lbs but still bought size 2X shirts from the thrift store today- I just like to be comfy.
I see a LOT of people that I'd like to ask, "Hon, don't you have a reflectional device at home?" ha ha

They make look at their mirrors, but sometimes they just don't see how it looks. I remember seeing a gal in a knit dress...she looked like a shrink-wrapped bag of potatoes. NOT a good look.

I said to myself, My god, if I was that big, I wouldn't THINK of wearing anything that tight!

And then I stopped, because I WAS/AM that big...and I don't.
