Drawers...open and shut

Jul 03, 2006 17:05

I've emptied three out of four of the drawers from the bed. (My porn can stay where it is, thanks.) I dumped one of the dresser drawers, then retreated. The rest of them were too scary...I don't know how long it's been since I've opened some of them. I saw stuff I'd forgotten I owned, for crying out loud. And the bedroom isn't even the worst room! In fact, God help me, it's one of the better rooms as far as clutter goes. Or, at least, visible clutter. The "crap hidden in drawers and closets" situation is still moderately serious. Not terrible, but not good.

For instance, if I can get this damned bureau cleared out, it's going to the curb. I've had it for 20+ years, I've gotten my money's worth out of it, it's wobbly and the veneer is peeling and it's time to say good-bye. One I get it out of my room, I'll have enough wall space that I can drag my cedar chest out of the closet where it's been living for the last few years...also unopened and I'm genuinely clueless as to what's in there. I certainly have plenty of comforters and other winter-type bedding that ought to be stashed in there, but has instead been folded and stacked in corners because I couldn't get at said cedar chest.

Because the chest is 22 inches tall rather than 50, I'll have an intoxicating amount of blank wall space. Beaulah gave me a terrific shelf thingie a while back, and it's been living in my garage awaiting rearrangement. I want to hang it above the chest, and use it to display my collection of boxes. (I have a compulsive attraction to little boxes, chest, coffers, tins and the like. And I'm absolutely certain that decluttering will yield more of those than I've kept track of.)

Now, this is a classic example of what I was saying yesterday; my room needs to be painted---it's becoming a mental health issue. Chocolate pudding brown is NOT an appealing color when it's slathered on five walls---it was last painted in 1992, when I was working third shift---and looks very out of place when most of the bedding is in shades of blue or violet. Ergo, I ought to paint it, but not until the crap is all out. Can't hang the new shelf thingie until it's painted. Well, I could, but it would be stupid to do that and get everything set up, then have to take it all down again to paint.

On the other hand (she says thoughtfully), I *did* find a few ratty old sheets that'll be useful for drop cloths. I just have to get it to that point. *sigh*
