The Universe has come to my rescue

A little while ago, the doorbell rang.* I wasn't expecting anyone, and after some kid tried to sell me a discount card yesterday, I was a little wary, but hooray, it was a father-and-son team who offered to mow my front yard for $5. Front and back for $10, I asked. YES.

It's being mowed even as I type, and that's one less thing to stress me out. ( Read more... )

I am such a scaredy cat that I never would have opened the door if I saw 2 men standing on my porch. Then again, I sleep with an aluminum baseball bat beside the bed when hubby is out of town.
I just don't open my front door unless I know who it is but for you , it paid off.

Only one of them was on the porch, and he was a skinny teenager. Dad was down at the curb in a crapped-out Ford Probe with the lawnmower sticking out of the trunk. Not exactly the Mansons.

I've been living alone for 22 of the last 25 years. Most of the random knock-knocks are Jehovah's Witlesses or schoolkids selling candy/wrapping paper/Girl Scout cookies, etc. No big deal.

That's just it- I HAVEN'T lived alone since my early 20's which is nearly 30 years ago. The one time we did open the door to a stranger, he ended up ripping us off. He was scoping out the place and had apparently gone around the entire neighborhood.
I am a Cautious Cathy these days..sadly, a sign of the times.

You're in a better neighborhood. Mine's definitely lower-middle class AND I've got the crappiest house on the block. (Needs paint, etc.) They're gonna look at my place and figure there's nothing worth stealing.

Your house is NOT the crappiest one on the block!
