The Madness of Jayne Austen

Jun 20, 2008 02:15

For once, a Friday that's actually a Friday, IE, I'm off the following day. Which is good, because next week they're interrupting my Wednesday with Posh Brits training at 9:30 AM.

The Jane Austen bookclub meeting was cancelled, much to my relief; I haven't read the damn book. (It's like being in high school again, and I was absent for the pop-quiz. Oy!)

Funny thing: In the title of the email she sent cancelling it, she spelled it Jayne Austen, and I had an image of the book with a candy-coloured pastel cover and the heroine simpering about what a stud the hero was. As if.

We know all good Regency/Victorian heroines never noticed the hero's sex appeal---there is never, EVER any "throbbing manhood"---it's all "a shy confusion troubled me at his words", "a curious malaise overcame me at his nearness" and shite like that. Oh, wait, they don't say "shite", either. Much too earthy. Even when the hero lets one rip, it's "D--n!" (I'd like to buy a vowel.)

Honestly, I ought to tear the genre a new one. The phrase "such a naughty nanny" holds so much promise!

Off to dreamland....
