Clothing as persona

The other evening at canasta, S was wearing a gauzy dress in bright tropical colors...she said she liked it because it's pretty and flowing and she felt like she ought to be running through a field of flowers in a tampon commercial. But of course! Does S have no sense of make-believe? That's why we play dress-up, that's why we wear costumes - to feel like somebody else.

There's a lot to be said for pairing your wardrobe down to essentials; I'm not a peacock every day. As long as you've got one or two things in your closet that you can pull on and feel fabulous in on days when you need it, you're set.
