A/N: This is my first Glee fan fiction. And the first fan fiction in years that I’ve posted publicly. No one has edited it so it’s not completely perfect, but I try! To make a long story short, I wrote this for fun and have finally gotten the courage to post this. I have a strange obsession with the Kurt & Rachel friendship so this is all complete wishful thinking. I’ll stop babbling now!
Although he would never admit this to anyone but himself, Kurt liked singing with Rachel. He couldn’t deny the talent she had - and the impeccable music taste when she brought up a Judy and Barbra song to sing. He had fun.
It was Friday afternoon. Sports practices were ending, tutoring sessions were filing out, but Kurt was in no rush to get home. He stayed at the piano in the choir room sorting through song books for a new solo idea. He heard footsteps behind him and half expected Figgins or Mr. Schue to be there to tell him to leave, and half expecting Karofsky or Azimio to be there and beat him up - after all, none of his “freaks” were with him. Instead, it was Rachel, looking slightly ashamed.
“Sorry… am I interrupting something?” She still had on her outfit from their duet earlier. She took small steps towards the chairs as Kurt swung around on the bench.
“Not unless you count finding my next big life-changing solo something…” He laughed as Rachel’s steps got quicker and Kurt realized to Rachel, yes, that is interrupting something. “I’m kidding,” he announced and she turned around and smiled. “What are you still doing here?” Kurt asked as he started packing things up.
“I forgot my bag.” she lifted it up as she began to walk out, but paused. “You were really amazing today, Kurt.” she said. He smiled back at her.
“You were, too,” this time Rachel smiled. Kurt got up off the piano bench and closed the lid. “Why did you do it?” He asked Rachel. She looked puzzled.
“Why did I do what?”
“Why did you and Finn throw the duets competition?” If its one thing Kurt learned to do his years before joining glee club, it was to pay attention to how people act. He could easily spot lies and he could easily see how uncomfortable Rachel got.
“What are you talking about? We never threw anything.” she shifted her bag on her shoulder and her posture tightened. “Unfortunately Finn and I made a mistake in our song choice in performance outfits and the rest of our fellow glee clubbers just didn’t have the inspiring and hopeful reaction we assumed it would.” This was a convincing excuse that could only work on the Brittanys of the world. Rachel sadly undermined Kurt’s intelligence in that moment. He wasn’t sure if he should be offended by that fact or if he should feel sorry that Rachel is such a terrible liar - it surely won’t help her later in life.
“Rachel, I’ve seen you quit the club and diva out of the room because you didn’t get a solo. If you truly didn’t throw this competition, the choir room would probably be set on fire.” He glared at Rachel who started to break. She let out a groan and fell into one of the chairs. Kurt followed and sat in the chair next to her as she hesitated a moment.
“Finn and I,” her talking was slow, like she was talking to a five-year-old. Kurt wondered if he should be offended again, but realized for once in her life Rachel is probably swallowing her pride. A small offense to pay to witness this. “threw the competition because we need Sam in this club.” she looked hard at Kurt who seemed to be thinking. The silence between them wasn’t so much awkward as it had been in the past. It wasn’t completely comfortable either. It was a pondering silence. Something Kurt used to take things over.
“You’re right,” Rachel looked surprised, and Kurt even had to admit he was surprised with himself. “We need new faces and we need new voices and at this point if Puck isn’t out of juvie by sectionals, Sam is our ticket to regionals and probably nationals.” Rachel seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. Kurt wasn’t completely sure why - he wanted to win just as bad as the other members, but he wasn’t crying into his Alexander McQueen sweaters over a lost certificate to Breadsticks. Not to mention, Kurt ultimately got caught up in Rachel and Finn‘s scheme unknowingly when Finn convinced him to drop Sam as his partner. “That was… slightly altruistic of you, Rachel.” Kurt got up and straightened out his suit as he walked towards the door, until Rachel called him back in.
“You like him,” Kurt froze in place. Rachel slowly stood up. Déjà vu crept in on both of them. Last year Rachel said those words to him about Finn - a mutual crush. This year it was about Sam - what Kurt hoped wasn’t a mutual crush. Kurt didn’t turn around yet. He didn’t really want to face Rachel, but Rachel wanted to face him. He heard her footsteps behind as she appeared in front of him. “I won’t tell anyone. You have my word.” She smiled at him. The kind that got Kurt to do the duet with her. He smiled back. He trusted her.
“Thank you,” he took a deep breath. “It’s pathetic, isn’t it? I’m human, too. I have feelings. It’s hard to have feelings for someone when society says you shouldn’t, and it’s even worse when it’s one sided with no chance of dimensions.”
“You’re not pathetic. If you stop looking those feelings someone has for you will come. You won’t feel this way forever, even if it seems that way.” she smiled again. “It does get better. Where would we be if it didn‘t?”
That was the moment Kurt remembered Rachel’s words only days ago. We’re more alike than you think. That was the moment Kurt realized how true her words were. If it didn’t get better, where would both of them be? He figured Rachel’s dealt with her own fair-share of homophobic comments. But aside from that, a year ago all they could look forward to in school was bullying. Now, maybe the bullying hasn’t stopped, but they have friends. They have people to make them feel better. Above all us they had the talent that Kurt had to all but assume would take him and Rachel far away from this cow-town. He smiled at her, a genuine one. He didn’t need to say anything. He figured for a time to come, this will just be an unspoken moment of clarity and understanding. The silence got interrupted by Finn jogging in.
“I thought you got lost,” he put his arm around Rachel. “Hey, Kurt.” he nodded and turned his face towards Rachel. “You ready?” Rachel nodded enthusiastically and eyed both Kurt and Finn.
“Finn, why doesn’t Kurt come along with us?” Kurt looked surprised and Finn shrugged. Rachel smiled again at Kurt. “We’re going to Breadsticks. It evidently has a good vegan menu, right babe?” she turned to Finn as he nodded and smiled towards Kurt.
“Yeah, man, you should totally come with. I promise I won’t make out with her in front of you,” Finn smiled as Rachel’s cheeks flushed and Kurt’s face scrunched up in disgust. Finn was oblivious to both of their reactions as he checked the time. “It’s Friday, it’s going to be packed, we gotta get going!” He said, pulling Rachel’s hand towards the exit. He swung back around for Kurt. “Dude, you coming?” Kurt looked at Rachel’s hopeful face, and Finn’s excitement. Kurt nodded.
“Yeah. I’m coming.”
He wasn’t alone.
