Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6

Important Note: I changed the POV of this last part, so it's not from Kame's POV only anymore. It'll make the story and the happenings more easily understandable. Ok? Because from just Kame's POV, it'd be odd, though even if not talking in the first person, he's still the one whose POV is more used in this final chapter.

Where am I?

Kame slowly opens his eyes, blinking a few times to adjust to the light.

He remembers being with Jin, talking about what had happened between them and then…
His eyes snap open, but he does not move an inch.
He remembers watching Jin falling to the ground, in slow-motion, and he’s the one that saw his whole life running in front of his eyes, like it was his life that was about to end.

Kame brings a hand to his face to rub his forehead, attempting to chase the headache away. He knows where he is - the smell, the light, the ceiling - he knows it all too well.

Hesitantly, he straightens himself, sits up and glances at the desk. The frame is gone, even though the crane remains. Of course it would be gone. Jin’s death has been anticipated even more and they never took that photo.

He reaches out for the paper crane, but his hand stalls in the air. It’s all over now and there’s nothing he can do but sit and wait, no matter how hard that is.

“Give me Jin back, stupid life,” he whispers to himself “Give me Jin back!” he says a little louder, helplessness and rage taking over him as he kicks the chair, then shoves all the things from the desk to the floor.

He throws everything he can reach, down, enraged by not being able to help Jin, who’s so important to him, and is so close to death, just hanging on a string between life and death.

Everything he went through in the last months with Jin brought them even closer and just when the gap between them seemed to have disappeared, Jin has to leave somewhere he cannot follow.

There’s the faint sound of things rolling that fills his ears and Kame opens his eyes, when he thought they were already open.
He takes a look around him - Nakamaru is pacing back and forth, Ueda looks distressed even though he’s silent while Junno looks at him worriedly but silently, and Koki is sitting down a few seats to his left, his expression blank even where his head hangs low.

Nakamaru walks to Kame’s side, kneeling in front of him “Hey, are you feeling ok?”

The younger one doesn’t answer him, instead, whispers something that doesn’t make much sense “I knew it would happen.”

“What are you talking about, Kame?” Nakamaru asks, confused.

“I kept pushing him and now he’s lying on that bed, battling between life and death,” Kame continues.

“Kame, you don’t know. Jin is in a coma but I’m sure he will be o-”

“I know! I knew from the beginning and yet I could do nothing to stop it from happening. How pathetic can one be?”

At that instant, something clicks in Kame’s mind.

You blamed yourself for it and said you knew it was going to happen and you could do nothing to stop it.

“Of course…” he lets out a bitter laugh “Of course…how could I delude myself?”

“Kame, no one knew. There’s no way we can predict the future,” Kame stands, flashing a sympathetic smile at Nakamaru before starting to stroll away.

“Where are you going?”

“I just need some fresh air,” he says as he makes his way out of there.

Once inside the elevator, alone, Kame sinks to his knees and runs a hand through his hair.

“So are you convinced now?” comes the sudden voice.

“You!” Kame jumps to his feet and is at the other’s collar in a second “Do something! Undo it! Let Jin live!” he shouts in hope of hearing a positive answer.

“I can’t. I told you so before, that no matter what, you can’t change the facts traced by destiny,” the hands fisted tightly on the angel’s collar slowly loosen their grip and Kame leans back against the back of the elevator.

“Is it so hard to change it?” his voice is barely a whisper.

“Give up, kid. It’ll make it easier for you,” he advises at last, ready to leave.

“Wait!” the angel turns around to face the boy again “Can people really hear us when they’re in a coma?”

A smile gradually blossoms on the angel’s face “Many times, yes. It’s your last chance, kid. Use it well,” he says lastly before disappearing.

Kame stays outside for around twenty minutes, just taking a breather and smoking a cigarette, even though he had promised himself he would stop, he couldn’t contain himself since he was nervous.

When he goes back inside, the suffocating smell of the hospital takes over him again and he falls heavily on the seat, waiting for something. What, he’s not sure, but he still waits.

Ueda leaves first and soon after, Junno follows. It must be the first time the boy has spent so many hours around without saying a single pun. An hour later, Koki announces his leave as well, saying he’s tired and pats Kame on the shoulder with a welcome smile on his face.
Jin’s parents leave almost without him noticing, if it’s not for Mrs. Akanishi to protest on their way out. They’re too shaken by the sudden happening to even say anything to Jin’s friends.

Nakamaru is the last to leave, after all, even distant, he’s always looking after every single one of them. He advises Kame to go home and rest, but Kame refuses to leave and so, after 10 minutes of trying to convince him, Nakamaru finally gives up and leaves, dropping a promise of coming back early in the morning.

Kame stays behind and waits. He budges from the seat to lie down over three of them, but he can’t fall asleep. He doesn’t know exactly when Jin will pass away, but he can’t rest assured, because he was coward enough to not be able to take another look at the calendar and see.

There’s a crumpled sheet of journal on one of the sheets and he stretches his arm out in its direction once boredom reaches its limit.
Absently, he plays with the piece of paper until a paper crane.
As the hours go by without his notice, Kame takes all the paper he can get his hands on and spends his time making paper cranes.

He doesn’t know how much time has passed when he feels someone sitting beside him. Outside, it’s still dark, the hospital is quiet, and he glances sideways to see an old lady clad in a white nightgown.

“Paper cranes?” she asks, picking up one. There must be hundreds around him, he finally notices once he breaks out of his own thoughts to listen to the lady “One wish, young man?” Kame doesn’t answer, but his eyes tell her what she needs to know.

Her creased hands pick up a piece of paper and she starts to fold it “Beliefs and wishes are what we make of them. There’s nothing one can’t do if they wish to. That’s the power every human being holds,” she tells him.

“Even rescuing someone from death itself?” he asks finally “I think all my efforts went to waste.”

She stands, hands him a perfectly-made crane “I wonder about that,” and then she walks away without another word, just a smile on her face.

I wonder about that too.

In the morning, Nakamaru is there like promised, bringing him breakfast, though he barely takes a bite of the food.
Kame didn’t sleep a wink, but he doesn’t feel tired. His heart, however, feels like a hundred years is weighting down on it, yet it flutters when the nurse tells him that he can visit Jin.

With heavy steps, he enters the room. Nakamaru gave him some time alone, as well as Jin’s parents.
Jin’s lying there, looking like he’s asleep, if not for the irritating beep of the machine which signals his steady heartbeat; but deep inside, Kame knows he won’t open his eyes, won’t look at him, and won’t be able to say goodbye.

He shakes off the feeling that gathers tears in his eyes and sits down beside the bed.
For a few seconds, he keeps quiet, trying to find the words and wondering how a person who looks so healthy can just pass away like that - no bruises, no nothing apparent to push him closer to death than any of them.
But he knows otherwise.

“Jin…” he whispers, taking Jin’s hand which is surprisingly warm “I’m sorry for all the things I said. I didn’t mean to disregard your feelings. What happened between us was,” he tightens his grip on the other’s hand “surprising, but…I don’t regret it. You’re the person that has shaken up my life the most and I won’t say I can’t live without you, but,” he pauses to take a deep, shaky breath and a tear rolls down his face “Are you going to make me learn to live a life you’re not part of? I’m so lost without you.”

He tries to hold the tears, but he’s not able to and soon small hiccups rock his body “Remember all the times we fought? I felt really stupid. I had no one to run to and cry or discharge my anger because you were both the person I scorned and the one I needed to have a chat with so you could advise me about what to do,” he gives a painful laugh “That’s why the arguments between us always lasted the longest time. I’m so useless without you, Jin so please…” his voice breaks, falling to a whisper “Please don’t leave me alone.”

He can’t take this anymore, so he quickly wipes his tears and makes his way outside.
Seeing Jin lying there like that, not able to produce an answer of any kind just hurts too much.

He has barely made it a few steps away from the room when nurses and doctors race into Jin’s room.
Alarmed, he makes his way back and comes across his worst fear. Jin’s dying - the consecutive beep of the machine tells him that much - but when he tries to get back inside, he’s stopped by one of the nurses and the shutters are closed, obstructing his view from whatever is going on inside.

His breath catches in his throat. That’s it, it’s all over and he couldn’t do anything about it.

“I told you, kid. It’s time for your friend to go,” the angel says when he’s suddenly by his side.

“Ta…” Kame forces himself to let out the words “Take me instead. You said that to give a life, you needed to take another, so it doesn’t need to be a specific one, right? Then take my life instead,” he says, tears streaming down his face.

“Are you aware of what you’re saying? Are you willing to give up your life in exchange for your friend’s?” Kame nods. That’s the last thing he can do, “Are you sure about that?”

Jin the person who means so much to him, who has so many dreams, who wants so much from life.

That’s the last thing I can do for you, Jin.

“Yes,” he says confidently.

“…Very well. You just got your friend a second chance. I hope his life is worth it,” the angel says, and Kame manages to smile through his tears.

“Follow me to the other side, Kamenashi Kazuya,” those are the last words he hears before everything falls silent and his body is falling. There’s only the sound of the beep of the machine that prevails, announcing Jin’s heartbeat that’s back to normal, and Kame’s body falls with a loud thud on the floor.

Be happy, live happily, Jin…

OK DON’T KILL ME YET, OK?

THERE IS A BIT MORE!

Epilogue

Slowly, Kame dares to open his eyes only to be faced with emptiness - seeing nothing, feeling nothing, hearing nothing - but a sudden voice calls him.

“Let me introduce myself again. I’m the angel of the wishes. I’ve adopted that name from the thousands that have addressed me as such. Now, Kamenashi Kazuya, what might your second wish be?” the angel asks as they float on the empty space.

“My wish is…”

What was his wish anyway? He was dead now, so why would that make any difference?

“I want to keep all my promises to Jin. All the things we promised to each other,” he finally decides.

“Wish granted, Kamenashi,” the angel smiles and he only finds it in himself to smile back, but his smile falters when and electric shock sends him to his knees.

“Kamenashi?” the angel asks, worried “Why…” he asks to himself.

Kame feels disconnected, hovering between two places. He can hear voices calling out to him, calling his name so desperately “What’s going on?” he chokes out.

“What…were your promises?” even the angel is speechless, but the question makes something click in Kame’s mind.

Promise me that no matter what, you won’t leave me behind. That when you leave, wherever you go, you’ll take me with you.

Kame gasps as his vision becomes blurry, the voices becoming louder.

Take me with you, Jin. In life and death.

“Kamenashi!” he hears the angel yell and he glances at his hands. They’re disappearing right in front of his eyes, seeming to deteriorate “Don’t resist. Just let it go…” he says.

“What about Jin?” Kame asks and there’s another shock that makes his heart clench.

“Just go…” he hears the angel’s voice that appears to become distant or maybe he’s the one building the distance.

And suddenly, there’s a warm touch on his hand, something that doesn’t seem to fit that place and he surrenders to that feeling, to where it comes from…

He gasps as he comes to his senses. The floor is cold and hard against his back, the voices of his friends loud in their ears and the same feeling of something warm weighting down on his hand, moves to his face.

Jin…. There’s Jin’s face, the boy kneeling beside him, clad in the white hospital gown “Kame!” he shouts in unconcealed happiness, lifting his body from the floor to hug him, squeezing him tightly in the circle of his arms “Don’t scare me like that again!” he says in a shaky voice and Kame lets the tears escape his eyes, small beads of relief.

In front of him is the angel, smiling “You got yourself a good end, kid. I admire you. But be warned, I took some old lady’s life and she wasn’t really satisfied for leaving behind her kitty, so beware that she swore revenge when she sees you on the other side,” he informs, still smiling.

Kame breaks into a smile “Bring it on.”

“Did you say something?” Jin asks, still not letting him go.

“I’m home,” he whispers, bringing his own arms around Jin’s body.

“Welcome back.”

***
“Jin, where are you taking me this time?” he questions as he’s dragged through the amusement park, and he wonders if people won’t recognize them and they’ll get into trouble.

“Shut up,” was Jin’s only answer before he shoved Kame inside the car of the ferris wheel.

Kame blinks in confusion as Jin kneels in front of him “Remember what you told me last time about bringing my girlfriend here?” Kame nods, frowning at the mention.

He seriously doesn’t want to talk about it. He doesn’t want to know about Jin’s girlfriend. Just the mention of it, makes his heart clench painfully.

“Well…Kazuya, I,” Kame lifts his head at the mention of his name and their eyes meet “I’m not drunk now or anything so listen carefully. What happen that night was intentional. I just needed a little push to do what I had been craving for, for the longest time,” Kame’s jaw drops “Do you happen to feel the same?”

Kame honestly doesn’t know what to answer to that. After Jin’s and his near-death experiences, life seemed to have acquired a new light and they were just going back to stand on their own feet, so he hadn’t thought much about his feelings for Jin, but…

“Jin, I…”

“Wait, don’t answer yet!” the older one shouts and Kame leaps in his seat “I know you said you wanted to be the one to confess first, but I have to tell you. I like you, Kazuya. I’ve always have, but I tried to keep it to myself and forget, but these last months have proved me I just can’t,” Jin says quickly, almost not giving Kame to catch up before he continues “I know I’m selfish and get easily jealous, and lose my temper fast, but would you give it a chance?” he blurts out and Kame’s only answer is to lean in and press his lips against Jin’s soft ones, surprising the latter.

“Is that enough to answer you?”

“Are you really ok with someone like me? I’m-” he’s cut by a finger on his lips.

“I know you, Jin. And I like you because you’re you,” Kame says with a smile and is enveloped in a hug.

“I love you, Kazuya,” Jin whispers, and there’s a genuine smile on his face.

“I love you too.”

***
Kame takes in his surroundings, a little scared of his location. Why is he in the future again?
But then he’s sure he can hear something that pretty much resembles his voice - hushed whispers and silent laughter.

His bedroom doesn’t seem to be one anymore. There’s no bed, though his old desk remains, the red frame with his and Jin’s picture placed on the same place, a new calendar neat and empty.

He follow the voices to another part of the house and slowly pushes the door open, peeking through the small breach.
Jin’s broad, naked back faces him, the bed sheets pooling around his waist where he’s sitting on the bed.
He pushes the door to take a better look inside and his own outline is revealed, his legs beside Jin’s hips and his naked body hidden by Jin’s broader one.

Kame feels his cheeks blush, matching the shade the him in the future’s own has, as lustful moans escape his lips as he bounces on top of Jin.
He so did not want to walk in on that, even if it’s himself and his Jin, it doesn’t seem right.

From over Jin’s shoulder he sends himself a glance and mouths the words “be happy”.
Kame smiles and thinks “I will most definitely be. Along with Jin.”

THE END

A/N: Ok, IT’S OVER \:D/ I felt such an urge to start a new story…and another, and yet another. There are 3 fics annoying the hell out of me, telling me “write, write” XD
I might…CAN’T PROMISE ANYTHING, THOUGH. BUT I MIGHT. Though I’ll be going on a much-needed writing hiatus, since school is ending and exams are starting D:
Anyway, once this month is over, I may never post in this journal again ;___; SUCKS!
So, that’s all for now. Hope you enjoyed this story because it drove me nuts! Now I wonder if I should enter the akame_ contest? I want to, but at the same time, I don't. I want to write my new plots, but then I won't be free for the next month...then (if I pass the exams), I'm free for a month, then I'll be going to Japan for 2 weeks...doesn't it make t hard to get something written? Gah~ what should I do?
And btw, I've done a good work in keeping myself from spamming you guys, right? X3
