1. I was idly playing around in photoshop today, mostly doing
Beatles& shirt variations with
Star Trek references.
I apologize for the .jpg artifacts. I wasn't paying much attention when I was saving a copy.
My first idea was the Federation founding planets. The names just work well in the simple format.
With the seal in the background it's still okay, but it doesn't have the same feel.
This joke has been made a dozen times but it's still funny.
The 2009 Remix. Poor Ensign Ricky, supplanted by a lighting trick.
I can't decide whether I like this one with Chapel or not. On the one hand, she was an important cast member in TOS. On the other hand, the movie crew has a good Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai thing going on.
The longer list looks better without colors.
The five captains of the Star Trek series work perfectly. A+ naming you guys.
And the more familiar version for close personal nuisances like Q.
2. There's a brand new solicitation for
Blackest Night: Flash which features some sweet ass evil lightning. Plus it begins with "The Flashes of the Two Cities" which is such a perfect turn of phrase.
3. These two things naturally led to
this.
The Flash is my favorite superhero. Or more correctly, all the DC speedsters are my favorite heroes. I love them each individually, their relationships with each other, and the legacy concept that underlies the whole series.
I debated putting Iris West on here since it's established that in the future she inherits the title.
The current speedsters running around. Jenni is in the future and Johnny's not back quite yet but Flash: Rebirth is building up to Jesse saving him.
A more complete list. The Tornado Twins get their mention, as do Owen and Jai who haven't mastered their speed yet.
Every superhero has a core philosophy. Superman is about the adopted stranger becoming a beloved son. Batman is about loss becoming a driving force. Wonder Woman is about a woman trying to make her way in a man's world. Green Arrow is Robin Hood with more douchey alcoholism.
The Flash is harder to pin down. It's about building a new family. The bat books have something similar but they are driven by a mission, each somehow alone despite sharing the same cause. The Flashes have different approaches to heroism but they're tied together by love. Familiar love and romantic love.
The Flash approach to relationships is so Princess Bride it hurts. They in fact pull "Death cannot stop true love, it can only delay it for awhile" repeatedly.
When listing the True Loves you can't ignore Jesse's husband Rick of the Tornado Twins in the future. Like all the others, Jesse was rudderless alone. She even mentally blocked her own powers because she couldn't deal with trying to honor her father's legacy while trying to fix her own relationship with her mother.
It's a repeated theme that Speedsters need someone to hold on to. After Iris's death Barry essentially tried to commit suicide by supervillain. Wally nearly gave up and died in the Speed Force when he didn't have Linda to pull him back. Don and Dawn sacrificed their lives to save their spouses a children. Johnny's life fell apart after his divorce because he couldn't be a good father alone. Max jumped through time because he couldn't be with the woman he loved since she was married.
I am now referring to them as the Flash Wives Club. You know that this would be a totally kickass comic.
Of course, some people just don't feel the love. The Flash's commitment to Evil Twin/Counterpart Motion is an inspiration to us all.
I'm pretty sure half of what I just said made no sense. My pure blind love for these comics is hard to express in words. I am figthing to urge to ramble about how Wally's relationship evolves with Bruce in realationship to Bruce's treatment of Dick because it's self indulgent.
So that's what I accomplished today. The format I'm using is 500x500 pixels with Helvetica. I might make some icons later because it's just fun to do. Everyone should try it.
