Movies 2 See

Since i don't talk enough about movies...harhar...I have decided to devote an entire LJ entry to one. These movies are the movies that I saw over the last year or so that I highly recomend to others. The list begins with:

5) A Walk to Remember Many of you will claim that my opinion of this movie is skewed because of my gigantor crush on Mandy Moore. However, I must say that for someone who has not been trained at all in acting, she did a good job. In fact for an actress in general, I though that her performance was solid. She had a very off role of sorts in this movie. The movie is a simple love story. Don't look for any meaning outside of that. There are a few "morals" that gave it a semi-didactic feel but in the end its a tale of first loves and if you are a sucker for love stories, then I suggest that you watch this movie.

4) Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius This is a movie that I had meant to see about a year ago when it came out but I never got around to it. Anyways when I got back to UT I decided to go on a children's movie spree and watched numerous "kid films." It involved watching Aladdin and other such disney classics, but I digress. Jimmy Neutron is an insanely smart first grader (?) who makes contact with aliens. The aliens come and commence to capture all the adults in the movie's world. Jimmy then gathers a group together to save them. Plot isn't too important here (it is a children's film). I was more impressed with how the film was done. It was funny, it was chlidish, it was perfect for kids. There were also some great moments for the non-kids as well. It's been a long time where a movie for kids seemed like it was done only for kids and not so much for adults. Anyways go see Jimmy Neutron for some good 'ole fashioned fun.

3) Black Hawk Down For many of you, the jury may be out on whether or not Ridley Scott is a good director, this film proves that he is. Well at least it proved that for me. From beginning to end I felt the awful pit of the stomach feeling that the soldiers in that situation must have had. It was gritty, it was inpiring, it displayed the directing chops of Scott and the acting chops of Josh Hartnett. With an incredible secondary cast to boot, I was amazed at how much the film made me feel as though I was there. If you're into war movies, this is the film for you.

2) Moulin Rouge Many of you who read this journal have already heard me rant and rave about this movie. It was funny, it was dramatic, it had music.
Until the summer, I would say that this is the best movie that I saw last year. The entrie cast was phenomonal. I really like Baz Lurhman's style (he did the remake
of Romeo and Juliet). If you like great movies with great characters, this is the movie for you. I was really rooting for the main characters by the end of the story.
This movie got robbed at the Oscars. It should have won best Director (Ron Howard can suckit...good acting does not a good director make). I also think that
Ewan Mcgregor got robbed of a nomination. Nicole Kidman i think was far and away much better than any other actress in the category. She pulled off a rather difficult role. She took the material and ran with it. Every other nominette was in there because she was in a dramatic role in a dramatic movie (I am still of the opinion that good comedy is much harder to pull off than good drama for an actor). Anyways Moulin Rouge....go see it.

1) Cinema Paradiso When my dad told me that we should all go see the re-opening of this old Oscar winner, I didn't expect much from the movie. He had seen the original a few years ago and highly recomended it to me. Little did I know as I walked into the restored Inwood Theatre that I was going to go on the greatest theatrical ride since Moulin Rouge. In fact I would have to say that this movie just barely beat out Moulin Rouge for my Oh-so-coveted number one spot. Anyways it's about a man who goes back to his old hometown when his mentor/father figure dies. He relives his childhood and most of the movie is a flashback. Anyways, the film was funny and moving and it was all about a boy's love for movies and so of course i could identify with the main character. Its a foreign flick so you are going to have to read for 2 hours, but then again Italian sounds really cool so don't whine. This movie was inspiring please go see it.

And there you have it. Chris Baek's must see movie list for the year.
