I can’t believe I’m doing this. Me. I’m going to lie to a teacher and sneak someone out of detention. Not just someone though; James Potter and Sirius Black. I couldn’t have picked a nice guy-- someone who would never even think about detention, much less be in it every single week. The troublemakers couldn’t leave well enough alone! I’m not going to back out though. Sirius isn’t going to stop teasing me about being ‘the perfect little witch’ if I don’t do anything about it.
Lily took off down the hallway after her last class and sneaked down into the dungeons where the boys would most likely be cleaning out cauldrons or some other disgusting chore for Professor Slughorn’s potions class. She was just glad they were serving detention with Professor Slughorn and not Professor McGonagall. She’d never ever be able to lie straight to McGonagall’s face. On the other hand, lying to Professor Slughorn, proving that she was not the good little girl he deemed her to be, would be thrilling.
She knocked on the door to his office and after his ‘yes?’, she opened it, coming inside. “Professor?” Slughorn looked up from his paperwork and she spotted James and Sirius on the other side of the room, cleaning out a leech tank with matching expressions of surprise at her appearance.
“Headmaster Dumbledore sent me to tell you to release these students from detention immediately,” Lily began. Her hands were shaking with anxiety. She had never lied so blatantly to a teacher-- much less one who actually loved her like Slughorn did! Oh Merlin James and Sirius owed her big time.
“Really?” Slughorn frowned in thought and looked from to the boys, who were grinning widely.
“Yeah, they found out that it wasn’t them. The other student, the guilty ones, will be sent for detention elsewhere, since the severity of the situation is much more now, considering they let someone else take the blame,” Lily said. She was staring at the boys, trying to tell them, without words to hurry up from the chairs. If they waited too long, maybe Slughorn would get suspicious. “Well, I have to hurry now, things to do, homework to finish. You understand, Professor?” Lily said, trying to connect with the egotistical person Slughorn really was.
“Of course, of course, Ms. Evans. I’ll just hand these boys their wands back and then this will all be done with. A misfortunate misunderstanding this is,” Slughorn said, letting the wands fly back to James and Sirius.
James and Sirius were quick to catch their wands and grab their belongings, following Lily out of the dungeons hurriedly-- thank God the boys weren’t quite as idiotic as Lily had first pegged them to be, all those years ago.
“Boys?”
All three of them winced and turned around to face Slughorn. “Yes, Professor?” James asked, the ever-present arrogant perk in his voice sending Lily into a deep annoyance.
“Be sure to clean your hands thoroughly-- that cleaning acid can do nasty things to the skin!”
James and Sirius shuddered and nodded, quickly closing the dungeon door behind them.
“So what was that bullshit all about, Lil?” Sirius asked, half-laughing and half-wondering as he turned to Lily. She blushed under the implication of Sirius’ voice. That she’d just lied for them! Well, she did, but there was no reason for them to gloat about it all.
“Shut up,” she fired back, turning and heading down the hall, feeling them follow her towards the Gryffindor tower.
She could hear James whisper to Sirius and then she heard him running after her. “Hey, Lily! Wait up!” He called to her.
“What do you want, Potter?” She asked a bit bitterly, not turning to look at him.
“Why did you do that?” James said, looking flustered.
Lily continued walking, but slowed a bit, making it possible for them to speak. “I don’t know, I must have been delirious, saving your sorry arses from detention, it’s not like you’d be grateful or anything.” She was stopped there by a tug on her arm.
“I’m grateful alright, that was some nasty cleaning we were doing and we had hours left. So thank you, very much. I just don’t understand why you’d lie for us,” James said, all the while pulling her so she’d look at him. When she finally did, she could see the hope written on his face, like two words, for me.
She cleared her throat and raised an eyebrow at him. “You didn’t do the crime, so I didn’t think you should have to do the time,” she said, shrugging. “I know Dolohov and his dumb friends did it and you got the blame... I just, I dunno, I didn’t think that was fair.”
James grinned a brilliantly wide smile at her. “You saved me. I mean, you saved us, but really you did it for me, didn’t ya, Lils?”
“Don’t call me that,” she said quickly. “And shut up, it’s not a big deal or anything, okay? Just drop it!” She tried to pull away but his hand was still on her arm.
“Lily, please, just this once, listen to what I say without getting defensive. I’m thankful for what you did, no matter what caused you to do it. I guess I just liked to think it was for me.”
Lily sighed, letting her guard down for one moment because, really, his eyes were soft and nice and he was calm and with Sirius not around, she didn’t feel like she was being watched or judged. “I just... don’t think you should have had to serve detention for something you didn’t do, you know?”
James grinned. “Well, all the same, thank you. You should let me take you out for at least a thank you, if not an actual date.”
She eyed him warily. “All the girls at this school want you, why do you always ask me?”
“Because you’re the only one I want. The only one I’ve ever wanted.”
Lily felt a tingle go down her spine at that. Before she realised what he was doing, she felt his lips on hers. She didn’t move away, like he seemed to be prepared for, but instead pulled him closer by tugging lightly on the mess of hair on his head and kissed him harder. He grinned against her lips and pulled away slightly. “Well, thank you for that, as well, my Lily.”
She chuckled, shaking her head and blushing furiously. “Just be happy I didn’t leave you cleaning in Slughorn’s dungeons. And don’t go and brag about this to your friends, James.”
“Deal,” he grinned happily, going back to kissing her softly.
