Oliver knew his boyfriend wasn‘t really used to dating. He also knew he wasn‘t really social. The thing is, nothing could‘ve prepared him for this, not even his extensive knowledge of how Percy Weasley works and now Oliver didn‘t even know how to react. Getting brown and pink mittens from your boyfriend wasn‘t exactly every boy’s, or girl’s dream. Although, Oliver was sure girls would like it better, with the pink and all.
“How do you like it?” Percy asked, sounding genuinely curious about it. Like he didn’t even realise what a horrible gift it was.
“Well, it’s pink,” Oliver started, trying to keep the disgust from his voice.
“Yeah, I know, it’s all they had at the store when I bought the yarn,” Percy started to say, but as soon as he let go of the word yarn, Oliver interrupted him.
“You knitted these yourself?” he asked incredulously.
“Well, I tried, but then I had Mom help me finish. It was much harder than I thought it would be.” Percy said, whining.
“Are you telling me you thought it would be best to knit me mittens for my birthday? And then when you couldn’t do it yourself, you had your mother finish them?”
At this point Percy had the decency to look ashamed.
“It’s the thought that counts, it shouldn’t matter what I get you, just that I love you and I want to celebrate your birth,” he said, the last part sounding like he was reciting something from a book.
It was at that point that Oliver realised something fishy was going on. There weren’t many people who realised, but Percy didn’t sound like that unless he was lying or quoting someone.
“Is there something you want to tell me Percy?” Oliver asked slowly.
Percy was smirking by that point. “Well, you didn’t really think I’d give you mittens did you?”
Oliver groaned, sometimes he just seemed to forget that even in his own strange, weird way, Percy was just as much a Weasley as his brothers.
“So what did you get me then? A hat?” Oliver joked.
“Huh, how’d you guess?” Percy said, feigning surprise, but Oliver wasn’t going to be tricked again. “No silly, I bought you a certificate for ‘Quality Quidditch Supplies’. I thought that was more your style than … pink and brown mittens, but if you’d like to keep them, I won’t forbid you.” Percy said, still unable to wipe the smirk off his face.
When Percy handed over the certificate, Oliver honestly didn’t think he’d ever been so relieved. He’d been eyeing at least two things in the shop, just waiting to get the chance to buy them.
“This is an acceptable birthday gift. Can I get a kiss too?” Oliver asked, setting the certificate aside to drag his boyfriend closer.
“That could be arranged,” Percy said before planting a kiss on Oliver.
“I still can’t believe you bought it. I planned it with George and I’m pretty sure it’s the second time he’s ever expressed that he’s proud of me,” Percy said laughing.
“Yeah, well, I think he has a right to be. This definitely competed with some of their finer pranks.” Oliver said before dragging his boyfriend to their bedroom.
“Happy birthday, love, I promise never to give you anything pink ever again,” Percy said before they tumbled to the bed.
“I’m good with that. The only pink I like is when you blush. Now that’s something I’d settle for,” Oliver said.
