Gryffindor Tower
Nick climbed the spiral staircase to the top floor with a heavy heart, leaving Joe on the fourth floor with a tight hug. They didn’t sleep in the same bed while at school because Nick remembered how much Joe’s roommates had made fun of him when Nick had been a first year and snuggled in with Joe the first few nights. He’d gotten made fun of, too, but his own humiliation was secondary to that of his brother so Nick had forced himself to sleep in his own bed after that, at least while they were at school. “See you in the morning,” Joe said, but even his tone was less cheerful as Nick kept walking up the stairs.
He wasn’t waiting very long before a short girl with long brown hair walked into the room and sat next to him on the bed as he took off his shoes. The two friends stared at each other for a while before she said, “As usual you haven’t said one word to me since Platform Nine and Three Quarters.”
“Hi Selena,” he said dryly and smiled. “There, two words…ack, I lost count at two.” It worked and she laughed, punching him playfully on the shoulder before wrapping him in a warm hug. “So tell me all about your vacation, tell me about Joe!” He rolled his eyes and pulled out of the hug as he tried to figure out what to say. She had a crush on his brother, a big crush, and it was pretty annoying considering Nick did, too. But she didn’t know that part. “Come on…you share a room when you’re at home you can give me all the dirty details on when he, you know…”
Eyebrows raised he just looked at her, really hoping she didn’t mean what he thought she did. When she blushed, he looked away feeling awkward. He and Selena had tried dating once and it had lasted about two weeks before they decided they were definitely better off as friends. Until now, though, Joe had always asked Nick if they would ever date again. He didn’t think Joe would be asking him that again any time soon. “I’m pretty sure he does that in the shower…” he said, and added silently, or in bed when he thinks I’m sleeping…
“So did you do it?” she asked, eyes wide and expectant and his cheeks seemed to flare. “You know…you promised!” He relaxed, knowing he’d never talked to her about wanting to do that with Joe, but he was always worried she’d somehow guess. “You totally put in some good words for me, right?”
Oh, that. No, not really, but he nodded and said, “I don’t think it’s going to happen, though. I think he likes someone else.” He immediately wished he hadn’t said that last part as her eyes narrowed dangerously.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to take out the competition.” She slid even closer and looked at him seriously before asking, “Who is she?”
He shifted uncomfortably and said, “Just leave it alone, Sel…you’re not his type, anyway.”
She let out a huff of air and an exasperated sigh, arms crossed over her chest as she went deep into thought. “Ooooh I bet it’s that Swift girl from Ravenclaw, that sixth year he took to the Halloween party last year?” Again, he shrugged noncommittally and she added, “You do realize you’re absolutely no help at all, right?”
“It’s not Taylor…” Nick said, giving in a little bit. “Besides, he broke up with her and she made a big deal about it, remember?” Selena pouted and her head dropped a little as he hoped she’d given up. “It’s not Nicole, either, before you ask…” he said quickly when she perked up and faced him once more, lips parted to give another guess.
“Oh, no fair! I hope it’s not that Demi girl, I know they are friends even though they're in different houses…” He laughed because, well, everyone always thought Joe and Demi were dating (when they weren’t making inappropriate comments about Joe and himself) and Selena glared at him again. “Oh my God!” she gasped and he stood up, putting some distance between them. Daniel Madger walked in and said hi so that ended their discussion and whatever Selena had been about to say didn’t make it out as she said, “We’ll talk later…” and walked out of the room as the rest of his and Dan’s roommates walked in.
“Hey, Selena,” he heard a familiar voice say from the hallway.
“Yeah, hey,” she replied a bit breathlessly and Nick looked up to watch as she stopped and gave Joe her best smile.
“Had a good holiday?” he asked and she nodded, and he said, “Me too,” before brushing past her and into Nick’s room. He flopped down on Nick’s four-poster, taking up most of the bed and already in his pajamas. “Nickyyy,” he called and reached out a hand dramatically, ignoring the sniggers of the other boys in the room. “I miss you being right next to me…”
“Ugh,” Selena rolled her eyes and turned sharply before taking the steps two at a time on her way back down. Joe lifted one eyebrow curiously and Nick shrugged, sitting down on the bed by Joe’s hip.
“What are you doing in here?” Nick asked, giving Joe a pointed look that clearly meant he wanted an explanation as to why his older brother was hovering unnecessarily and embarrassing him in front of his classmates.
”I told you,” Joe said, sitting up and putting his arms around Nick’s stiff shoulders. “I missed youuu!” Joe said again as if maybe Nick hadn’t actually heard the first time around. He slowly relaxed into the hug and let Joe pull him to the comforter and he shut the curtains before turning around to face his brother.
He cast a quick charm that would keep anyone from hearing their conversation (or anything else) and was about to ask Joe why he was really there when he got his answer straight from Joe’s lips as they pressed against his own.
