( Part One )

September 1st, 2006
Great Hall, Hogwarts, Scotland

Sitting side by side on the bench, pressed unnecessarily close together so that their sides were touching, Joe and Nick were at the Gryffindor table with the rest of their house waiting for the sorting ceremony to begin. This always put Nick in a bit of a mood that tended to last until just after his birthday because it reminded him that he was the oldest in his year by at least three months. Fate had it that he was in his third year but would be turning fourteen in just over that many days. It had been brutal when he'd realized he would have to wait an extra year to join his brothers at school.

Kevin had graduated the year before, so it was just he and Joe now from the Jonas clan, and someday Frankie would be next. The family was only half-blooded on their dad's side, apparently he had given up all magic in search of Godly redemption when he'd been younger, but when the children began receiving their letters he didn't stop them from going to Hogwarts. The family was originally from New Jersey, U.S.A., but a few years after Nick was born they moved to England due to their mom's occupation. Jobs in the fashion industry were easier to get in London, and Denise Jonas now had her own clothing line. And while she was making her own name in the Muggle world, Kevin, Joe and Nick were almost as famous as the Weird Sisters had been in their prime, and the three Jonas Brothers were younger.

Nick felt Joe’s hand on his thigh squeezing it gently, and Nick moved his own arm loosely around his brother’s waist. “I’m okay,” he said, and it was true for now at least. It wasn’t bothering him yet that, he was oddly more alright with it than usual, and that was probably largely due to what had happened on the train with Joe. He had a moment of wishing he hadn’t said that when Joe’s hand moved off of his leg, but when it settled around his shoulders instead he felt himself relax into the embrace. They’d always been close to the point where people at school made fun of them for it, but neither of them cared. They were brothers and people could say what they liked, only now it happened to be a little truer, which didn’t bother them, either.

Nick could still remember the first time he’d slept in Joe’s bed. Their parents had told them since they were moving he should get a big boy bed like Joe in their new house in England. For almost the entire last month they’d been in their house in Jersey, Nick had slept in Joe’s bed. He’d managed to slip out of his crib (he’d been able to do that for almost a year) and he made his way into Joe and Kevin’s room, climbed onto the bed the second oldest was on and poked his older brother repeatedly until the boy woke up. The moment he did, though, he was wide awake and worried about Nick. But all the three year old had said was, ”Joey can I sleep in here and see what a big boy bed is like?

Joe had nodded and said ”Of course,” before sliding over and making room for his baby boy; after that when they moved to the new house Joe stopped sharing a room with Kevin, and shared more than that with Nick almost every night from then on. “Oooh, the Sorting Hat!” Joe said which made the thirteen year-old look up from his chicken, Omnipod on his right hip to keep his insulin levels in check. Everyone got really still as the new students lined up in no particular order and Professor Hagrid slid into his seat, letting the Deputy Headmaster, Professor Vector, set the Hat on the stool. Headmistress McGonegall nodded her approval and Professor Vector pulled out a somewhat long scroll of parchment with the list of names for new students.

“Attention students new and old,” the man said with a cheerful wink. “It is my proud duty to welcome you back, but not my job to sort.” Nick sighed, Professor Vector could get long-winded at times and go off on tangents, and he was sort of surprised McGonegall allowed it. “Allow me to introduce Hogwarts’ oldest member of staff, although I believe he needs no real introduction for his very existence is in his name.”

At the round of applause that the speech was over flickered halfheartedly throughout the throng of hungry students, and the small gathering in the front of terrified first-years, the Sorting Hat began to sing.

“Oh, many years I’ve sat,
Right here upon this stool.
Or perhaps in the Head office
With no draft to cool.
But I’ve heeded every warning
Given all the clues,
And now I see, for woe is me
I need to sing a different tune.

I’d rather not sort you,
But I’ve got to give the test,
It’s the way I’m programmed
And history is the rest.
It’s been a twelve long years
Since that glowing cup was here,
And last time, these events
Brought very little cheer.

There’s other news to tell
Which isn’t news at all,
But I ask you to use caution
When making any call.
And Now I’ve got to sort you
Because that’s what I’m for
And what’s the worth of a Sorting Hat
That won’t sort at all?

So will you go to Gryffindor
Where the fierce might belong,
Or perhaps in Ravenclaw
Where wit will beat them all?
You might yet prefer Hufflepuff
Where loyalty is prized,
But Slytherin might be a draw
For anyone with pause.”

And with that the song was done, the Hat still once more upon the stool and everyone sat completely still. The Hat hadn’t sung any warnings since the time of You-Know-Who, so this was a pretty big deal. Everyone knew the ‘other news’ the Hat had referred to was the serial killer that was slowly killing off Wizards and Witches, but only three had died so far, was there perhaps more to be worried about? Did the Aurors catch the wrong guy the week before? Had he had an accomplice?

There were a lot of questions and not enough answers as Professor Vector cleared his throat, a new attempt at a smile on his face as he began reading out names.
