Update

I haven't had a chance to post in a while. We've been out of town a lot.

First we went to my parents' house in Raleigh for Thanksgiving, which went as well as can be expected. There were three toddlers bouncing off the walls (sometimes literally), which meant it wasn't very restful for the big people. But we had a good time anyway. It helps a lot that the boys are old enough to take to things like the Children's Museum, and old enough to sort of follow verbal instructions. Last year, we had three pre-verbal monkeys who were not clued in to the world enough to handle things like a trip to the playground.

Then we went skiing, which was awesome. Great snow, nearly no lines at all, and we picked up a few new tricks. Calvin woke up coughing (and woke us up coughing) every night, which was not awesome, but could have happened just as easily at home. Toward the end of one ski day, Colin and I split up and agreed to meet at the bar at the end of the day. I got there first, and immediately fell asleep in my chair. The bartender woke me up, "hey, have you been drinking? You need to keep your head up, I can't have people passing out at the bar." Just severely sleep deprived, not drunk, barkeep.

Since then, I've been running around trying to get my Christmas presents purchased, wrapped, and shipped in time. I handed the last batch to the FedEx guy at 5 pm Friday. I think 6 days before Christmas is my all-time record for getting this stuff done.

I hate the running around, hate it so much. My main problem is, I'm not much of a gift person and I hate shopping. So I never see anything in a store and think "hey, this would be a great gift for so-and-so!" In fact, when I'm in a store, I almost never think anything other than "get me out of here get me out of here GET ME OUT OF HERE". And I can never just dream up good gift ideas. I have to ask people for gift ideas (I ask everyone what their spouse and kids would like, not what they themselves would like), which no one wants to give me before Thanksgiving. And there are just not that many days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, especially since we travel a lot then.

We went to church yesterday, for the first time in quite a while. I thought Brian Ferguson gave an amazing sermon. It felt really good to be back. I hope we can heal from recent events.

Calvin was sent home sick from daycare today. We're having some work done on the house which involves shutting off the heat for several days (they swear everything will be done by Christmas Eve). So my evening will be less than awesome.
