Holly and Allison

My friends Holly and Allison got married yesterday at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Danny and I went to Oakville to attend the campfire reception. As we left Toronto there was a pillar of smoke rising above downtown. It was a good night to leave the city.

We were among the first guests to arrive at the campground. There were several group sites to choose from, and we had our pick. We ended up having a section all to ourselves.

It had rained earlier. The evening was not hot, but muggy, so we were constantly damp. The dusk air simmered with bird songs. The park is noted for nesting bluebirds, but we didn't see any.

Holly's dress was a 1930s vintage, hand knitted and crocheted.

Only a small party remained for the campfire. We started telling stories about Holly and Allison, but it soon turned to stories about missing airplane flights. I know Holly from Writers' Circle and we didn't know anyone else there, but I was impressed with how enjoyable the company was. As Danny says, everybody was intelligent and geeky.

Later someone brought out delicious, slightly unusual hors d'ouevres. It was all I could do not to eat all the grilled portobello mushrooms, they were so good.

I was happy from the moment we arrived and pitched our tent. I love camping and being outdoors on a summer evening. I need to get away that way more often. I expected the birds' morning chorus would wake me early, but I snoozed until after 8 a.m. for the first time in many weeks.
