On to the last four days of the trip.
- May 26: Leaving Winnipeg. Manitoba has some birding hotspots, particularly significant wetlands where many waterfowl species nest. I found a good birding destination, Oak Hammock Marsh, 45 minutes north of Winnipeg. I'd like to get up early one morning and go see this. Please, djjo? We'll be too late in the season to see migrants, but breeding birds should be active and vociferous on a spring morning. Alternatively we could do this on the morning of the 25th, then head back to Winnipeg for sightseeing. Sometime on the 26th we have to leave Winnipeg. If we have time I'd like to head south to explore Mennonite country in the small prairie towns there. It's about a three-hour drive east to Kenora and Lake-of-the-Woods, our next stop. Danny mentioned Whiteshell Provincial Park on the Manitoba/Ontario border. The Kenora area itself sounds interesting, unfortunately boat tours of Lake-of-the-Woods are only available on weekends so early in the season. We don't have reservations for that night yet, but I've sent a request to Mackenzie Lodge. There's also a more expensive but not exorbitant B&B package at the Best Western Lakeside Inn with panoramic views (recommended by The Rough Guide to Canada) [Edit: we have a reservations at the Best Western].
- May 27: Kenora to Thunder Bay, time 7:12. Blue Lake Provincial Park might be a nice place to break up the drive, which is notoriously monotonous. Must stop at Kakabeka Falls. We have hotel reservations in Thunder Bay.
- May 28: Thunder Bay to Wawa, time 6:12. There are several remarkable parks along the way: Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Pukaskwa National Park, and (just beyond our accommodations for the night) Lake Superior Provincial Park. We've reserved the same cabin for this night as May 19.
- May 29: Wawa back to Toronto, we could opt for a slightly shorter route, 11:16.
