On November 4, 2006, I installed iTunes on my computer. I don't own a portable media player other than the car stereo, but these past two years have changed the way I listen to music at home and on the road. Here is my "Top 25 Most Played" list. Compared with last time I posted this in February 2007, red titles are new to the list and purple ones have moved up.
- Rufus Wainwright: "Pretty Things" (I've listened 27 times)
- Shaye: "We Are Water" (26)
- Annie Lennox: "Into The West" (23)
- Dahlia: "Pedro"
- Jane Siberry: "One More Colour"
- Buffy Sainte-Marie: "I'm Going Home" (22)
- Steeleye Span: "Padstow"
- Travis: "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?"
- Annie Lennox: "Every Time We Say Goodbye" (21)
- Enya: "May It Be"
- k.d. lang: "Hallelujah"
- Rufus Wainwright: "Vibrate"
- Rufus Wainwright: "14th Street"
- Jem: "Maybe I'm Amazed" (20)
- Randy Travis: "Forever And Ever, Amen"
- Buffy Sainte-Marie: "Goodnight" (19)
- Goldfrapp: "Satin Chic"
- Jane Siberry: "The Life Is The Red Wagon"
- Jem: "They"
- Joni Mitchell: "Both Sides Now (2000 version)"
- k.d. lang: "The Valley"
- Katrina & The Waves: "Walking On Sunshine"
- Maddy Prior: "Dance On The Wind"
- Rufus Wainwright: "Oh What A World"
- Scissor Sisters: "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"
The list hasn't changed radically. Perhaps more interesting is the rest of the 5,000-plus songs: so many artists new to me, and deeper exploration of old favourites. With so much music to enjoy, it's difficult for anything new to reach this list. "We Are Water" was the best new song of 2007, exceeding all superlatives.
It's November 1 and we've already had persistent snow on the ground, but this Penstemon cultivar still graces my garden with its impossible colour.
