Quick check-in

I had intended to post on Friday before leaving Toronto for Turkey Point, but Danny was sick and I didn't decide to go camping without him until mid-afternoon. Finally, I made an impetuous and disorganized departure in order to beat rush hour.

I shared a campsite with Bob and his dog, Jake. He brought hamburgers, which I barbecued on my Coleman stove. We managed to keep the fuss over food to a minimum. With plenty of time on hand, camping and gourmet cooking can make a fun combination, but at the Point it feels like an unnecessary distraction. And with the girls it's one more chore I don't need.

I made the acquaintance of Rob from Toronto. He was sharing the adjacent site with his friend, Peter, who I've met before. Yesterday was a gorgeous day, sunny and breezy with a high around 30°C (86°F). I didn't cover my legs adequately with sunblock and ended up with some painfully burnt streaks and blotches, but the rest of me is okay.

The owners have put considerable money and effort into improving the campground. This summer they're in the process of having a new meeting hall constructed, much larger than any that existed on the site before. The walls appear incomplete, but it has been covered, so a dance went on there last night. The big new pool deck is finished.

I was impressed to hear pine warblers singing in tall conifers along the west side of the campground. Until now I had taken them for chipping sparrows.

Steady rain started around 11 a.m. so I packed up quickly, then visited for a while with Rob, Peter and a couple others before heading out. Listening to one queen complain incessantly about the rain, which was actually warm and pleasant, I looked forward to reaching the cottage tonight, where everything seems more peaceful and we take the weather in stride. There's nothing more relaxing than sitting in the living room with the sliding doors wide open, listening to rain fall in the woods.

With this turn in weather I decided to leave the Point early for a stop at home, which hadn't been planned, to clean out the car and drop off camping equipment. I just have time now to shower and repack then head back onto the highway. Tonight I pick up Marian and Brenna and head to Lake Fletcher for a few days. Unless I make a phone post, I'll be incommunicado until Friday night.
