Last night, Brande's mom brought Lucy over for a short photo shoot. It was the first one I have done that wasn't our children or out at an event. While we do not have a small studio lighting setup like we want, a friend had let me borrow his SB-600 flash to try out, so we made do. I took about 80 photos, and there were maybe a dozen that I thought were really good. This one was one of my favorites (click it for a larger version). I am really starting to love the 50mm lens that Brande got me.
While testing the lighting and various modes to see what would give me the best quality shots, I discovered how much of a difference my custom settings make. I tested a few shots in the Auto and Portrait modes and compared them to the ones I took in Manual and Aperture. The difference was amazing. I believe all of the best shots from last night came in Aperture mode with me tweaking the settings as I went along, so I'll be trying more with that and seeing if I can get better with it.
I still need some practice with my post processing in Photoshop and there is still a lot for me to learn. But I think we're getting there.
