Victories and goodbyes.

Alright then.

I was really worried when Brad sold LiveJournal to SixApart.
I was mad when SixApart sould LJ to SUP.

I've been wanting to get away from this for awhile now, but I've been held back for one really minor reason.
My RSS feeds. It is damn hard to find an RSS reader that I like. I've played with LiveBookmarks. I've played with Sage. I've played with Google reader. I've played with Bloglines. Nothing really worked for me.
I finally found Brief. It's a Firefox add-on that I really like.

I mean - I will miss the ability to comment alongside other LJ users, but I'm just not into the site anymore. The aim and focus of the site has changed, and it's a dinosaur now. It's not kept pace with other trends out there. Part of that is users being resistant to change, and part of that is the inability of the LJ staff to pursue new directions. They're trying to milk the (slightly tweaked) business model that Brad set forth about 10 years ago. The web has changed. There's no way I'm going to pay extra money for the ability to upload 100 px icons when I could upload an unlimited amount of large sized images to Myspace or Facebook. Nor am I going to bear having to deal with flashing .gif animations that are attached to journal posts, when I have the choice of a site with text ads that stay off to the side (Although it's a moot point, I don't see either kind of advertisement.)
They have a comforting format, and that's been the hardest thing to pull away from.

But the combination of Facebook and RSS has done them in.
So... In the coming week(s) (motivation dependent), I'm going to cull my friend's list down. It doesn't mean I'm not interested, because each journal does have an RSS feed. There are a few people I won't drop (friends only entries don't syndicate, or I still want to be able to comment with my LJ account), and will check back with LJ on a semi-weekly basis, but although I haven't commented much (or at all since I changed journals), I have read every entry of every one of my friends since about January of '02.

This is me on Facebook. It's the best way to keep in touch.

Sayonara.
