OK, I get that (mostly) everyone is pissed about the protests happening in Vancouver, and the destruction of property, vandalism, etc., but one comment comes up repeatedly that makes no sense ( Read more... )

I don't think I'm going to think of them as protesters as much as rioters. I'm sure the peaceful protesters are embarrassed enough over being associated with individuals with no common sense.

"Fuck that. I am not taking personal responsibility for someone else's violent acts. If you create violence, OWN IT."

THIS.

I'm so sick of this attitude that people who engage in bad behavior aren't responsible if there's something their victims should have done "better".

I'm also sick of these douchebags who won't take responsibility for their actions and somehow justify violence.

There is no justification for violence whatsoever. None. Sorry. The only thing these idiots are accomplishing is making themselves look like even bigger cowards than they already are. People are going to go out anyways, and like today, more of the general public are going to stand up to them and fight back. That's not what these douchebags want. These cowards want everyone else to cower in fear.

I have to disagree -

I can only speak for me personally, but when there was a peaceful protest at 1st and Commercial on Friday just after the torch ran by. Traffic was interrupted for a while. I went to see what they were protesting. It was inconvenient for people, but I was still interested. I respected what they were doing and how they were doing it.

I have zero respect for someone who thinks smashing windows and spray painting random cars, and have LESS respect for their cause. I no longer care once there's violence (against people OR property).

peaceful protesting shows respect and opens lines of communication and makes people more interested in why the protesting is happening.

violent protesting just makes people look like stupid assholes.

So what positive attention and communication have been opened up by the myriads of peaceful protesting? The city made numerous promises to the groups now protesting that they have systematically broken over the past 7 years. It doesn't appear to have had any impact.

Protests don't always get things done, they just give people a chance to have a voice.

Violence leads to less ability to have a voice.

Then why is it that more attention is focused on the protests that are violent than on the hundreds of peaceful ones that were better attended over the past 7 years? The violence is getting the views pasted across the world stage. Whether you agree or disagree with their tactics, they're gaining enormous attention because of the.
