Newsesses about Drama class

So... a few weeks ago I had this group assignment for Drama class. The assignment involved recreating a single scene from a stage play, IN FRONT OF THE CLASS. If anybody's been around me when I'm about to go make a presentation, or speech, or ANYTHING that involves over 2 dozen eyes and ears staring and listening intently to every little thing I do for the next 10 to 15 minutes, they'd see a nervous wreck.

And I get the feeling that's what the group leader saw from me during the last rehearsal minutes before the class started. She didn't look all that pleased when I kept forgetting my lines. Although thankfully my other group members weren't doing so well either =P But still. I didn't wanna go up there only to mess up...

I spent the next 20 minutes going over my lines again while they rehearsed other parts of the scene where my character wasn't involved. It certainly didn't help that the group before us did VERY well. They were marvelous. FURTHERMORE, the group leader came up to me and asked me to play a second character in a later part of the scene right as the class started!

But, when the time finally came and I went up there, I was AWESOME!

I was playing the part of a drunken sailor. Eventhough after 3 sentences in I was starting to forget my lines I made up for it by ab-libbing. The lecturer had a lot of nice things to say about my acting. Everything from the loudness of my voice, to the slight slurring every now and then, to the slightly exaggerated movements, to my liberal use of the word 'fuck' eventhough the original script called for no such swearing =P

The second character I had to play was a... girl. And I only had a few minutes to prepare for her so I didn't do so well, but the lecturer was nice and said my rather 'fabulous' and 'animated' version of a really cold, militaristic character was an interesting twist to the character =P

Still, I had to make up half of my lines as I went because I forgot them. Eu Lynn came to watch and she said she could see the exact moments when my face changed a little, to show that I had forgot my lines =P And she was apparently about to burst out in laughter when I came on as the female character.

But in the end, I was AWESOME! So I enjoyed myself =P

I think playing tabletop RPGs really helped me a lot in this assignment. Tabletop RPGs thought me how to get into a character and 'act' based on how I feel the character should naturally act. I think I would've froze if I hadn't been playing tabletop RPGs with my friends.

tabletop rpg, acting, being awesome, drama, assignment
