I'm beginning to think that I'm surrounded by people who would be part of the mafia if it weren't for their tragic lack of a spine.

Yeah, so this guy... new leasing agent for the Koreans who purchased the mall my store is in, he's really spoonfed. Spends his day kissing ass, demanding other people kiss his ass when he feels he can get away with it, goes home and does his lines of coke and cries himself to sleep, probably. Hate Los Angeles sometimes, I really do.

Comes in trying to play nice, friendly softball. Asks what I'm planning to do when my lease is up at the end of October. So I tell him point blank, staying nice and professional, they need to show me some results before I go and let them sign me to five years where my rent would go from $1,600 to over $2,700. Business has been on the decline, and while I'm making my rent and utilities it's not even paying for my beans or my apartment, and that's not unreasonable since I live in a crappy Japanese-style residential hotel.

He immediately goes into vague threat mode. Well, if somebody comes along and wants to pay the full price, I'd have to go. I look out the door and inform him there are eight vacancies on my floor alone. He says the new price is fair. Note that he believes this so much that he repeats it five more times during the conversation, which is much like the current McCain campaign strategy.

"The price is fair!"
"Asking me to go back to a point where I'm going to lose money hand over fist for the foreseeable future is not fair."
"They'd charge you four times as much down the street!"
"For ten times the foot traffic. I came in here because it was a good starter. People go to a shopping center with high rent because they deliver the business. That is what's fair, charging what is sustainable. And I'm making rent and bills in record time, so I know what's sustainable here. That isn't."
"The price is fair!"

Each time he said that, it got a bit less smarmy and a bit more shrill and angry. He was really losing his cool. Long story short, he doesn't like me. He's jacking the rent up when my lease is over, even if I just go month-to-month. It's obvious I'm not going to be a source of his commission willingly, so he's going to try and force it out of me. He feels I have no options.

Sucker. Been planning for this for months.
