Quick Stats about the Pygmy village we will be visiting:

1. 95% of ALL children die before their 5th birthday. They die from hunger and preventable diseases.

2. The average lifespan of a person living in the village is 35 years old.

3. Half the people live in “houses” made from leaves attached to sticks.

4. The other half of the people live under the open sky. They have no shelter.

5. In Rwanda, there is the rainy season and the dry season. During the rainy season, it rains for days and sometimes weeks at a time. The Pygmies sleep standing up during the rainy season because if they lay down they will drown.

6. They have one water source and no knowledge of personal hygiene. The same water they use for drinking, they use for all other purposes as well. Many die from unclean water in this village.

What we will be doing to help:

This trip we will be building typical Rwandan houses for about half the village. The people of the village will finally have a roof over their head. They will be able to lie down to sleep in the rainy season without fear of dying.

River’s Promise also has the following plans for future trips:
1. Build the other half of the village houses.
2. Teach practical skills such as farming and fishing
3. Build a local school for the children and make a condition of the children receiving an education, the parents go once a week for both academic and practical instruction.
