TX and back again

Feb 12, 2008 10:02

This past weekend I was in TX at my father’s celebration/funeral. I had the honor of hearing a lot of stories about my pa here is one from Vietnam:

My dad was a helicopter door gunner during the war and the first time he fired on the enemy the pilot came on the radio and said:

“Whoa, that’s friendly fire. Cease fire.”

my dad barked back “Affirmative receiving friendly fire. Returning same.”

Another Vietnam story:

When my dad first met Gary Bogancamp (a friend he knew and worked with all his life) in Millville, New Jersey my dad asked Gary if he fought in Vietnam. Gary said that he hadn’t. My dad said that he was forced to join the Navy and that they wouldn’t take in the army because they found something wrong with his back. Gary asked what they found and my dad said “They found a big yellow stripe.”

I heard many more stories about my Pa and some of his close friends gave some amazing toasts. It was an exhausting couple days.
