Spacey gets to grow his hair back, Spidey has a new writer and Shellhead gets a novelist!

Actor Kevin Spacey is in no hurry to shave his head again, apparently -- he told SuperHeroFlix, "There are no developments right now. I know as much as the rest of the world knows ... Not that I knows of. I'm signed to do it, but I don't know anything about the storyline or the shooting schedule at this point." Spacey also noted that he's not currently signed for the "Justice League" movie.

Sadly, this is a very strong indicator that the departure of Dougherty and Harris has caused yet more issues with the sequel to Superman Returns. Although The Man of Steel is penned in as having a 2009 release date, major doubts are being cast as to whether the production can even get (up, up and away) off the ground in time as the many action scenes expected by fans and the studio require months of extensive CGI, animatronic and stunt work, with shooting and re-shooting to boot. This, along with this week's earlier official statement from Joel Silver that Wonder Woman is on indefinite hiatus and the lack of casting for the Justice League movie ( Rupert Evans as Superman was a hoax, it seems) is showing that once again, WB is unable to leverage their ownership of DC Comics -and with that the licenses for them- to turn them into films.

At least The Dark Knight's still in production...
According to the Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter James Vanderbilt has been signed to write the fourth cinematic adventure for the wall crawler. Laura Ziskin is returning as producer of the billion-dollar franchise, though no deals have been made to bring back series director Sam Raimi or stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Plot points are being closely guarded by the studio, though the intent is to scale back the story to include only two villains instead of repeating the "Spider-Man 3" model. Thanks to Rafik Sassi for pointing that one out.

Several points:
  • Thank heaven they're scaling back on the villains! The Sinister Six are not on the cards anymore! That was one half of the major mistake made with Spider-Man 3. The other being that the use of Venom, which was - frankly - stupid and hardly fit into the MovieVerse.
  • With none of the cast signed on to return yet, and Raimi also hovering in directorship limbo, perhaps Sony Pictures is wanting to play a waiting game and see how Ed Norton's The Incredible Hulk does to see the viability of a reboot?
  • Laura did a good job producing the first two films, here's to a better go at number 4!
I may not be a fan of Spidey in the sense of being a follower of his comics, but the first two films were good. I would hope that they use them as a model rather than anything else.

Fan favorite Peter David made an announcement on his website of some interest: "The major project at the moment is one that I've not announced before this: I'm writing the novelization for the upcoming 'Iron Man' movie which will be hitting theater in May of 2008. The novelization will be published by Del Rey. The deadline on the book is tight, but I should have no trouble hitting it. Rock solid script (although naturally I can't go into any details.)"

While I am more than glad to have Peter A. David (one of the best writers and novelists in comics right now) novelising the script for the Iron Man movie, and I'll be at my local bookstore or comic book shop on day of release, my concern lies in that Peter has never really written Tony Stark or any of his supporting cast before, with the exception of one short mini-series: Heroes Return. Hopefully, his novelization, coupled with his comic-book knowledge as a past and current writer for Marvel will result in an amazing read!
