As weird as this sounds, I have not yet been able to set up an appointment for gallbladder removal surgery. The surgical centre I saw a specialist at was supposed to call me to set a date and I was told to call them if no one did. I've been trying to call their surgery appointment desk for the past two weeks, they're always busy. I've left several messages that were never answered and even left a message with their regular receptionist desk, who noted the person in charge of surgery appointments manages the schedules of five doctors. My best guess is that with COVID likely making hospitals delay or cancel elective surgeries, it is independent surgical centres like the one I consulted that are picking up the slack. There's every good chance they're slammed. The most frustrating thing is if someone had left me a message saying that much, I would have taken it at face value. There are plenty of people far less healthy than me who need far more critical treatments than me. But no one has answered the phone.
I'm not angry about this. Honestly, between a heavy work week, finishing up the
Finches' Guide to Malaysia and finding the time to keep calling the centre, I'm just tired. The guide is up by the way and fully laid out!
I spoke to my regular doctor last week and I got a referral to a second place to see if I can arrange for surgery there. It's a process, but I think at the very least my most recent imaging should already be in the system which will help move things along. That's my goal next week, to see if I can get an initial visit there. I am not in pain, it's not an emergency. I've really only had to take the hydrocodone twice at this point and it does work. It is getting towards the end of the year though, so at least I'd like to get this done before Christmas?
Finches is coming out in two weeks and I've had no luck trying to arrange readings. Given the current climate, I'd wonder about the feasibility of it. I'm told virtual readings exist, clearly there is much research to do to find somewhere still. If anyone knows interesting or odd review/book promo places that might want a stab at my wee book, I welcome the suggestions!
