Real serious authors don't need to worry about feeling special. The writing industry doesn't actually care when or how you finished your writing, and unless you're some kind of superstar, everyone's work will go through the slushpile and be picked apart the same by slushies ( Read more... )

Self-publishing also comes with the hidden caveat of making the writer less attractive to agents and normal publishers. It's why it's called "vanity press" -- the ultimate idea is that one is publishing for one's self, and therefore, many mainstream types think this option has less quality control than the conventional methods of publication.

And of course, "quality control" refers to getting one's work picked apart. It is a nasty business.
