Sulu secretly loves it when Kirk and Spock go down with the away team to explore new planets. Things tend to run more smoothly when he and Chekov have the conn. There are no diplomatic incidents and no one is taken off the bridge by force. And Uhura is always in a fantastic mood when she doesn't have to watch Kirk and Spock's completely homoerotic married-couple bickering. They aren't fooling anyone. But more than anything, Sulu loves being the boss because being the boss means no one gets to look at him askance if he wants to hold Pavel's hand while they work.
