The Dowager Queen Kapi'olani

Jul 11, 2008 18:14

"As the sorrowful procession passed through the palace gate, we were overcome by a heart-rending cry and wailing which could have come only from a heart bereft of all that was most dear and precious. It came from the Queen Dowager Kapi'olani, standing alone and unattended on the balcony of the Palace, weeping and leaning over the railing to have a full view of her late husband's casket as it was being borne up the broad Palace steps. Her grief was pitiful to witness."  Curtis Piehu Iaukea
