The Dreamscapes Project will be playing at The State Theatre (Falls Church, VA) on Friday, June 19th. For those that like to see the boys in a rock venue, this is probably one of the better places to see them. (Stage, dance floor, tables.) This is also one of their big shows and we're hoping to draw a good audience to enjoy the night ( Read more... )

Well, I'm glad you ask this question. *grin*

There are a few reasons.

1) In this case, the venue is going to tally the pre-sold tickets as of a certain date next week to decide which bands will play in which time-slots. The band with the most pre-sold will get the best time slot. This isn't something that happens all of the time and I don't love this method because I feel like it puts the fans on hold. I like planning ahead and not being sure of what time a band is playing is...well, not smart, in my opinion. The fans with kids or with something to do the next day don't know if their band is going on a 9pm, or 11pm. That's just crappy.

2) Bands like being able to figure out what kind of showing they'll have. It's not always necessary, but it can help avoid panic. TDP has always had this problem. TDP fans are notoriously "in the last moment" types. Sometimes, 2 people buy tickets and 2 people show up. Other times, 2 people buy pre-sale and, suddenly, there are 200 people at the gig. (A tiny bit exaggerated, but not by much. This has definitely happened.) If they think only 2 people are showing up, they become anxious and they are more likely to bug their friends and family because they are not going to make decent numbers at the show. This is all pretty businessy, which sucks, but that's the way it goes. The problem is that good bands sometimes have slow fan nights...so I guess there's always a danger that you'll look like losers at a venue. Meh.

3) Pre-sale tickets usually mean that people aren't going to back-out at the last minute. That's a little sneaky sounding, but that's also business. It's the way it's got to be, I suppose. Jer and I sometimes force ourselves to buy pre-sale tickets to things because, otherwise, we really suck at committing to things. (Or remembering! Sometimes we plan on going somewhere, but we suck with noting it and remembering to go. Once we've dished out our money, we're more likely to remember. heh.)

4) Finally, there's usually a discount, so it's good for the fans, and the band is happy when the fans are happy.

In summation (good lord - I write a lot...and it's not even brilliant stuff. bah.), pre-sale is good for the VENUE, which is why it's good for the band. Because the band must make the venue happy in order to play there again and in order to be talked up to other good venues.

*whew*
