So, last night, Carl and I were both online in the office, minding our own business and procrastinating about going to bed. It was about 12:45 and Carl needed to be up at 5am to go to work, but meh, you know those times when you just feel like staying up even though you're tired...
We were also listening to Radio Dead Air, and had music playing, when all of a sudden, we heard this weird noise coming from the livingroom. It almost sounded like one of the cats growling, but it was really low and deep, more like a dog. Darkie, one of our cats, was in the office with us and immediately perked up and ran out there to investigate. I, thinking in split seconds that Stella, our bengal, was seriously feeling threatened and was about to attack something(cause I'd NEVER heard her make a sound like this), runs out into the hall, too, to investigate. I thought maybe we'd left the front door open to let the air in, and something was outside on the other side of the screen door that Stella didn't like.
As soon as I got to the hall, I could hear the sound better, and I quickly realized it was coming from the hall closet where the a/c and water heater were. I yelled for Carl to come out, and grabbed the fire extinguisher because I saw a flash of sparks. That's when he yelled at me NOT to spray it because I'd get electrocuted, and he cut the power to the entire house.
THEN, I realized.... maybe I shoulda grabbed a flashlight instead.... *sigh*
Luckily, the fire went out immediately on its own, so we didn't have to call the Fire Department, and he got the power back on to the rest of the house(except the water heater). I shot an email off to the property manager, and a little while later, we went to bed with the windows open to the COLD air in order to get the electrical fire smell out.
I talked to the property owner this morning, and he's going to get a plumber out ASAP to replace it, and I took a couple of photos for the owner for insurance purposes. I'm just REALLY glad we were still awake, because if we'd been in the bedroom asleep, with the door closed, we never would have heard it in time.
I think it's time to look into renter's insurance....
