Summary: Kenya can't take hiding the truth from Zaizen any longer and finally confesses to being a witch and sorting out what their official relationship status is.
Oshitari Kenya was not the calmest sea in the world.
Most days he was turbulent and wild but that was just his nature. Today wasn't most days though. No, today was the day that he had chosen to spill his secret which really hadn't been a secret for long, but fuck if he could see himself continuing to hide the truth from his lifelong friend. The very same lifelong friend flicked an uneasy glance to every now and again from beneath the fall of his lashes that was supposed to hide the fact that he was watching Zaizen while he picked away at the strings of his guitar.
The decision had been days ago, so why wasn't he opening his mouth yet?
He knew why and the answer was, perhaps, the most hated one for him to own up to. Quite simple; he was afraid.
He was very afraid that green eyes that sometimes watched him with varying emotions from boredom to passion would fill with disgust and that the friend he did far more than simply crush on would begin to view him as a freak, if Zaizen didn't start to think he was outright crazy.
“Would stop giving me those looks every few seconds,” Zaizen Hikaru had no idea why he was being watched this time but it was somewhat annoying. Most of the time he was able to tune Kenya out when he was loud or doing what he did now and just sent casual glances his way. But today was different; today it felt like there was more than the usual lusty purpose behind the looks dark eyes sent him and it was beginning to make him paranoid. It was an odd sensation and one he hadn’t felt since the stalking and touches when he walked home from work but it was enough to make him want to shake the blonde until he spilled what was on his mind so he could get back to playing with his composing before returning to the paper due next week.
"Sorry," Kenya sheepishly muttered, ducking his head to hide his gaze from his best friend that now carried the title of his lover. He bit his bottom lip, fingers falling to the last string of his guitar to pick nervously at the steel thread.
"Um, can I talk to you a minute?"
“Yeah, especially if it’s about the way you’ve been acting or the mysterious post you left to your cousin. Unless it’s about getting married to him in Peru or something,” Zaizen didn’t mind the sleeping with the cousin thing but if they were getting married, then a problem might arise and he’d have to back down from his odd relationship with his best friend. He seriously doubted his joking around was real but one never knew with anyone these days. But he really did hope it was about that post because he couldn’t quite figure out what it was that had been bugging Kenya for a while now.
"I ain't getting married to Yuu!" Kenya denied, head snapping up and eyes widening over the thought. He was fine messing around with his cousin but married? Hell no! In fact, when he thought of getting married or being with someone for the rest of his life….
Come to think of it, he had never thought about so why was it that now that he was all he kept seeing was the face across from him? "Anyway," he cleared his throat shying away from what he was thinking and not really wanting to go there. One crisis at a time, Kenya!
"Speaking of stuff like that… what are we? You and me?" Again, he fiddled with the strings unable to sit perfectly still in his nervous state. Had he been standing he would have already been pacing a groove into the floor.
"Are we dating? Like… seriously dating? Boyfriend kind of dating?"
“Eh?” That wasn’t what he had been expecting but it definitely earned Zaizen’s full attention. Of course he had thought on this subject quite a bit, especially when they first had sex and they were awkward around each other. But where did they stand in the relationship scale? He knew Kenya was still having sex with his cousin which, again, he was fine with because it made his best friend happy but could they be an official seriously dating boyfriend couple if that was happening?
“I dunno... I think we’re dating. I guess it’s not super serious since you’re still with your cousin when you guys have needs but I’m not with anyone else,” he wasn’t even with Bane anymore other than the blood donor routine he did. Zaizen had told Bane that he was fine with the feeding but the sex had to stop while he figured things out with Kenya. It didn’t seem to matter though with how little the vampire came around now. He either really was constantly busy or mad and ignoring him. Whatever.
"Do you want it… I mean, would you want it to be serious?" he asked fingers stilling on the string he plucked so nervously before, giving his undivided attention to a question that deserved no less than that.
"Though, before you answer that I have something I should probably tell you now." God, Zaizen was going to think he was absolutely insane and would probably need some sort of demonstration to prove he wasn't. Shit, he didn't even know if he could summon any power to convince him he wasn’t a complete loon. He knew it was there. Yuushi had helped him tap into it and proved what he was saying about witches and their bloodline was true, but he wasn't even trained or didn't even know any spells or incantations. How the hell was he supposed to show Zaizen what he was when he couldn't even do that?
Okay, now he was seriously intrigued. Kenya was still acting insane but there seemed to be a reason behind it which was good. If there was a reason, there was likely a solution. They could work with this, he decided and turned around completely in his chair to face the babbling blonde. As Kenya tried to work through his confession, maybe he could work through what he really wanted out of their relationship when he never really wanted anything serious before. “You have my attention, so what is it?”
"Fuck, I don't know how to say this so you won't think I'm insane so I'm just going to say it but I ain't crazy!" he insisted, midnight gaze pleading with Zaizen to have that small amount of faith in him. He didn't know what he would do if the one person that had always been by his side suddenly wasn't there anymore, but he couldn't stand to go on hiding stuff from his best friend and lover another day.
"You know all those animals that I said were showing up and following me around? And the squirrel that I kept talking about?" he took a deep breath, tried to steady his nerves but discovered it was an impossible task.
"They were unattached familiars who came to see if I was… That is, they were looking for their witch. Only, I guess most of them didn't click with me because they left eventually, except that damn rodent."
Yeah, so it was out there. Maybe not in the most coherent way or even in the most straight forward, but, fuck, he still couldn't imagine going "Guess what? I'm a witch!" just like that out of the blue.
“Okay,” Zaizen knew his reaction was pretty anti-climatic but considering his life, he couldn’t exactly work up the shock that was to be expected with such a confession. “So you’re a witch with a squirrel for a familiar? Cool although odd since I thought cats and even dogs were the usual choice,” really, what else was he supposed to say? He supposed knowing the boy he grew up with and had living in his home for years was actually a witch was big news and it did surprise him on that level but it wasn’t like he couldn’t believe they existed thanks to Bane dragging him into the underground world.
“So is this a recent discovery?”
"You believe me? Just like that?" Why did he suddenly feel like a fish out of water with his mouth hanging up and equal parts shock and relief bubbling wildly inside him making him giddy from the rush? Kenya stared at Zaizen for the longest time before he realized he hadn't answered his question. Actually, he hadn't answered any of them but thank god a nod would suffice for it, because he didn't think he could get another word out.
“Why wouldn’t I? Is it that hard to think witches exist? Maybe I didn’t think my boyfriend was one but... whatever,” it was almost amusing how his acceptance seemed to rattle Kenya more than laughing would have. He was expected not to believe anything and call his friend an idiot or delusional and maybe he would have in the past or just ignored the statement by turning back around to his computer but Zaizen couldn’t deny the paranormal in any shape when a vampire was a friend.
"I guess I figured you'd think I was nuts or whatever," Kenya admitted with a sheepish grin, relief apparent in the midnight eyes that had moments before been pleading with Zaizen. Now, though, those very same eyes were quickly filling something more.
Something just a little bit dangerous and wild, spawned by the one word he heard in that sentence a lot louder than any other.
"And I ain't exactly one yet," he said as he slid his guitar off to the side, carefully depositing the instrument without banging the neck when he laid it down. "Not a proper one, anyway, since I only know the few things Yuushi showed me, and know my power sometimes slips when I'm really mad. At least that's what Yuu said."
He tilted his head, hand lifting to crook a beckoning finger in his boyfriend's direction.
Zaizen gave a face at the beckoning finger, wondering when Kenya thought that move would get him anywhere. Maybe he thought the status of witch earned him superior points or he was trying to use some charm. That made him smile and with a dramatic roll of the yes to make sure his friend knew he was only humouring him by following the finger, Zaizen ended up plopping himself in Kenya’s lap.
“Does this mean we have a pet squirrel now?”
Kenya snorted back a bark of laughter, dropping his head to burrow his nose against Zaizen's neck the minute he plopped his ass onto his lap. "I can't believe you did that," he murmured, voice strained from his attempt to hold his humor in check while slender arms snaked around his boyfriend's waist.
"And I guess we do… sort of." and then just as quickly, "So, your boyfriend, huh?"
“I thought since I was on a roll with surprising you in my reaction I might as well keep up in with my actions,” Zaizen also knew that if he stayed in his chair that Kenya might see it as a sign for a fight or that he was now feared because he was a witch. Words and actions didn’t always agree and one was more believable than the other in such cases.
“Yeah... my boyfriend. Sorta thought of you as that for a while but wasn’t saying anything since you like your thing with your cousin and didn’t want to put limits on you. And the squirrel stays outside or in your room.” He had limits to what he would allow into his house, after all. Witches and vampires were one thing but rodents were another.
"I had kind of hoped that thing with the cousin would eventually expand to include you," Kenya hesitantly admitted some time later. He chose his words carefully as he spoke, arms holding tight to the friend that had been by his side for forever.
"I have fun with Yuushi, but sometimes I wish it wasn't just me enjoying his… uh, company but you too." He laughed nervously and prayed he wasn't about to be slapped for daring to speak up about his fantasy.
"Everything just feels more… I don't know-it is just more, when you're with me."
To go from squirrels to threesomes kind of startled Zaizen and it earned Kenya a weird expression. “huh?” He shouldn’t have been too surprised considering what he had overheard the night he walked in on the cousins together on the couch but to actually be approached about it now was odd. He did still think Yuushi was sex on two legs but did he want to sleep with the cousins at the same time? That was the question and Zaizen didn’t have the answer. “I love knowing the affect I have on you and that you want me to experience your cousin... or have him experience the awesomeness of me but I dunno...”
Where was the fun in life if you acted like a total prude and backed out on things offered your way that wouldn’t harm you? “I guess it could be okay but not something I want to schedule in the day planner, you know?”
Kenya finally let loose his laughter, the sound was far too scarce in his life but now it echoed in his ears. "Fuck, that's an awesome expression on you. I gotta figure out ways to get it out of you more often." He told Zaizen, freeing one hand to bring it around to the softness of an unguarded cheek so fingers could lightly play over the soft skin.
"Then I guess this… we are serious then, huh? And that the playing around with Yuu should stop, until and except for the times, if ever there, when you want to, you know."
“I’m not going to make you stop something you aren’t quite ready to give up,” he had never been a total commitment and serious relationship sort of guy though Zaizen knew he wouldn’t mind trying it out with Kenya. But that didn’t mean they had to rush right into things and totally go exclusive and give up things-not that he ever would give up anything other than other partners. If Kenya wanted to play with his cousin some more, than Zaizen wasn’t about to stop it and the kiss to lips he knew would part in protest soon he hoped would convince the blonde of his seriousness.
Kenya snaked his arms around Zaizen's neck, letting them loosely loop there while he thought and savored the kiss that stopped him from talking for a few minutes more. Thinking, he mused hazily as he nipped and nibbled at those lips moving over his, was quickly becoming an ability hard to do when his boyfriend started distracting him with kisses. Yet, he tried to order his thoughts one by one, so that the protest he had been about to give became something else altogether.
"While part of me wants to swear I'll give up playtime with Yuu right now, there's another that really likes playing with him." He admitted remorsefully. God, he hoped he wasn't hurting Zaizen by saying stuff like that, but he wanted to be as honest as he could for once because this was important and not something he could just ignore.
"So, I think I'm going to say-when you feel like you're ready for me to give up playtime with Yuushi, tell me." Pulling away, he caught a green-eyed gaze with his own, silently imploring even as he awkwardly did so with words. "Cos, I think, as much as I like my cousin and the time I spend with him, that you're a lot more important to me."
"And I don't want to hurt you."
“I just said I wasn’t going to make you drop him,” Zaizen didn’t understand why they were already going around in circles for the conversation when he thought he had been pretty clear. Wasn’t it also obvious that he wasn’t the type to latch onto someone and demand all of their attention? It was true he cared a lot for Kenya and had for years but he also valued his own space and time alone so Yuushi was currently doing him a favour by taking the mouthy blonde off his hands whenever he was too busy to give Kenya the attention he needed to thrive. Perhaps one day he would find himself wanting all of his best friend to himself and then Zaizen would lay down the official claim, but for the time being, he was fine with the awkward-to-most sharing they had going on.
"Yeah, and I just said if ever you do want me to, then tell me." Kenya retorted with a small grin. "And since that's out of the way and we both know what the other wants and expects for now…. Do you think we can cut the fooling around with music and head to bed?"
He grinned sheepishly, reaching up to give a tug to a lock of Zaizen's hair. "I've spent weeks thinking that when I told you you'd think I was insane or a freak and would start hating me. Kind of a relief to know you don't and won't." which meant curling up beside his boyfriend and just savoring that knowledge was one fine idea.
“I guess we can,” Zaizen made it seem like it was a hard decision to give up playing with the music but the grin that appeared and the kiss he gave before standing showed how okay he really was with the idea. “Your room since I don’t want to disturb the cats... unless the squirrel has already moved in,” it was one thing to have a domestic cat as a pet but odd park animals that nibbled on nuts and stared at you like they were plotting your demise was something else entirely. And speaking of that...
“So a squirrel is your familiar... I always knew you had a thing for nuts,” Zaizen laughed and made for Kenya’s bedroom, knowing his best friend would catch the innuendo and the implication that he had been gay and enjoyed the man’s body before he realized he did. No, nothing would chance between them, even with one of them being a witch.
