Summary: Thanks to Saeki being a smart owner and spoiling his dog with a snazzy collar, when Rin found Sir Bacardi he knew where to return him. He just wasn't expecting that kind of treatment when he did bring the dog back.
The werewolf took one look at the crowd inside the Bleeding Moon and immediately turned to go. He cuddled a puppy close to his chest, arms used to shield the animal from the people that seemed to converge on him from every direction the minute he stepped through the front door of the club, after having finally worked his way up in the line that streamed outside.
People were congregated outside the building waiting their turn to get inside like the place was some sort of Holy Temple or something, which was stupid! Didn’t they have better things to do? Grumpy because of the wait he had endured and anxious because of the crowd that seemed to press in on him, he was frantic to work his way right back out the door the moment he felt his heartbeat increase, his palms become slippery with sweat, and his ears ringing. He hated crowds!
He hated people and any place that was full of them was on his do not venture to list, but what was a guy supposed to do when he held an arm full of sleeping lazy puppy that sported a tag pinpointing this building as his home? He did the right thing, of course, despite thinking how cute the puppy was and how nice it would be to always have it at his place to curl up with at night. Except, he hadn’t thought doing the right thing would land him right in the middle of a shuffling sea of bodies seemingly racing for the bar where tenders were presenting drink after drink with amazing skill and flourish.
He stumbled in his attempted retreat, tightening his hold on the puppy that whimpered right then. Mumbling lowly, he apologized for his too tight hold, but knew the dog couldn’t possibly understand him. Just like he couldn’t understand why the jerk that just elbowed him couldn’t apologize for it!
Saeki Kojirou was doing usual mingling with the crowd with the occasional bartending routine while keeping an eye on the door every time it opened it allow someone else in when another had left to make room. He hated the limit on how many people the fire department would allow to safely dance in his club but he loved the line that waited outside each night to be one of those lucky enough to get in. So it was when the door opened and a wide-eyed blonde walked in looking completely out of place and afraid like something might attack him at any moment that the vampire appreciated that safety rule. He would have missed such an interesting kid otherwise and Saeki had a feeling this one would be a guy not to ignore and what was he holding?
Even his enhanced eye sight couldn’t properly pinpoint what that bundle was with people pushing and dancing near the man Saeki left his current entertainment to go introduce himself to. With a dashing smile in place and his charm turned up high, the vampire approached with an elegant grace, waving, head nodding, and saying hello to those he knew as he passed by. “Welcome to Bleeding Moon, I’m Saeki, one of the owners can-that’s my dog!” His elegance and perfect composure was forgotten when he glanced down at the object the blonde held to see his lazy yet beautiful dog sleeping through all the nose and commotion.
“Follow me,” he gave the order without saying anything else as he turned on his heels and marched through the crowd that almost seemed to part for him as Saeki made his way to the office where privacy and something close enough to silence would be waiting. He wanted to know who this man was and why he had his dog!
Rin recoiled from the sudden harshness of Saeki’s voice. He didn’t know where the man came from but he hadn’t been there a moment ago, but then he was with his lyrical inviting voice deceptively warm. Now, though, it barked out an order for him to follow him like some trained pet or something. He thought about telling Saeki to shove it up his ass and storming out with the puppy in tow because that sort of crowded place couldn’t be at all comfortable for the animal that needed lots of space and the outdoors to play in, not a crowded flesh market!
Yes, he thought about it but just as soon as the thought hit it washed away, a jostling push from behind and a renewing of people hurrying around him on all sides throwing him into a panic. The only seemingly constant in the chaos was the man disappearing into the throng and Rin could feel the walls closing in on him even worse as Saeki got further away. “Wait!” he cried frantic to stop the stranger who had verified he owned the puppy in his arms, feet suddenly moving and gliding over the floor until he was practically running to catch up.
God, there were so many people there! Far too many and he was on the verge of hyperventilating by the time he caught up to the vampire, one hand moving of its own accord to latch onto the back of Saeki’s shirt and holding on tight.
Saeki didn’t appreciate the hand grabbing at his shirt that he guessed cost more than the man holding his dog but because the man was holding his dog, he didn’t say anything and led them through the crowd like two women afraid to be separated on their way to the bathroom. It was a little annoying trying to stomp gracefully across the room with a man clinging to his shirt but it was still done in order to hear what had happened with Bacardi and to get him out of the mass of people and resting comfortably in bed again. Hiss poor puppy had to be terrified and lonely without him.
When he had successfully led them to the office, Saeki ushered the blonde in and closed the door behind them. The music could still be heard but it was now nicely muffled and a decent conversation could be had without yelling and vampire hearing needed. Willing his composure to return and putting his pleasant face back in place, the vampire gestured for his guest to sit on the leather couch to tell his story. “Sorry about that, once again, I’m Saeki, one of the owner’s of this place and you’re carrying my dog that one of the staff let out without permission or a brain. May I ask your name and how you came to possess my Bacardi?” It wouldn’t do to attack the man when he may have only been the messenger or the innocent person that found him and someone with a grudge against him was pulling strings somewhere.
Rin stiffened as he stepped inside the office, his arms trembling around the puppy when he released Saeki’s shirt to return to the self-appointed mission of protecting the sleeping canine he carried. “I didn’t steal him!” he cried in defense when paranoia and anxiety from being locked inside the crowded room outside with little space to maneuver within caused him to hear a note of accusation that may not of really been intended by the vampire wide dark eyes frantic with worry and agitation looked upon.
He suddenly felt so odd and blamed the fact that Saeki had a scent about him that reminded him way too much of the man he’d been handcuffed to during a very weird charity event weeks before. “I found him. He was scrounging around in a trash bin close to my place when I was going home from work, so I took him home, gave him a bath, and fed him. And I would have brought him back last night, but I was so tired and wanted to sleep so badly, so I let him sleep with me, and then brought him back as soon as I could tonight, which was after I got off work, because I had to go to work. My boss counts on me!”
Just in case Saeki thought to fuss at him for not bringing the dog back sooner, he told himself, trying to force away the urge to pace as it arose. He wanted to go home before something odd happened like was always bound to happen when he was around other people.
Saeki was completely appalled. “Sir Bacardi would never rummage through rubbish!” He knew the dog did like to eat scraps of food left out and he did chew at the garbage bag when he was younger but that habit was being broken and his dog was certainly above acting homeless and going through bins of garbage! He needed to focus and calm down. It was obvious the man was telling the truth no matter how unbelievable the finding part was given the rest of the rambling. The blonde that still hadn’t given his name was skittish and nervous as hell and since he hadn’t put the word out he was going to kill whoever had taken Bacardi, Saeki believed the story and this kid was some innocent passerby that rescued his baby.
“All right fine, you found him and treated him well, thank you.” Saeki had to work on keeping his temper aligned and to stop himself from lunging for the dog and giving the kid the full third degree. “You can let him go now and I suppose you deserve a reward.” Keeping one eye on the man with his puppy, Saeki moved to the desk where he sat down at to poke around the drawers. He had cash on him but not enough to cover reward money he thought was proper for Bacardi’s return and dug around until he found a stash for emergencies related to the club-which his dog sort of could count as. He refused to bombard the kid with questions about who he worked for and if he knew anything in general since he still sort of believed it could be a plot to get to him given his new status in life. It was only because of the dumb waitress that admitted to letting Bacardi out that he didn’t push. That, and the fact that he could read the kid’s mind pretty easily and get any information that way.
Rin stared aghast at the money as Saeki counted it out, dark eyes wide and nearly scandalized. "Huh, what?" That was probably more money than he made in a night, but he hadn't worked for it. There was no way he could take that!
"You, that is to say, you don't have to do that! I didn't… I don't want it!" he cried immediately taking a step back and flushing with guilt when the puppy in his arms whined and wriggled, a fluffy head lifting to blink sleepy eyes open. Upon spying Saeki he let out a single bark, writhing in Rin's hold until he could do nothing but set the animal down at his feet.
Saeki stopped counting out the money when the dog barked and was soon bounding toward him. “Sir Bacardi!” a genuine smile appeared as he held out his arms for his puppy to jump up into and he gave his fluffy beast a hug. It wasn’t very manly and definitely not like a killer vampire leading those of Tokyo but damn it, he missed his dog! He also hadn’t realized just how much he had until that moment or how much he loved the dog until he was gone. “No more running away for you, mister, and no more trusting the staff for me.” He ignored Rin a little longer as he played with his dog and gave him the lovings they were both obviously in need of.
Finally, Saeki composed himself and stopped the cuddling and little belly rub by setting Bacardi down and watched the dog go about his usual routine of sniffing everything in the room. The vampire gave a good-natured head shake at the habit and then picked up the pile of cash. “You returned something extremely important to me and while he does cost a lot there are reasons that make him invaluable to me, so you deserve this money and I expect you to take it, lest you insult me.” Rounding the desk, Saeki grabbed a hand and made Rin take the money and stiffened slightly when he caught a strange scent from the man. At first he attributed it to Bacardi but now that the dog was gone and even though scents lingered, Saeki could tell the difference now between species. The blonde before him was a werewolf. Wasn’t that just what he needed? Although it did bring out some pity from the vampire. The kid was poor, needed a new hair style, and was a wolf.
Rin whimpered feeling very much as if he were cornered and about to be kicked, but still he shook his head setting the wild white-blonde untamed silken halo about his head to whip unfettered about his face. "I didn't work for this!" he insisted leveling his own version of the puppy-eyed look on Saeki, plush lips curling into a pout.
"I just thought he looked so hungry, and then I thought he'd get cold outside and maybe would feel lonely out there by himself, so I brought him home. And taking him home isn't work!" he insisted, trying to still the trembling of his voice and hand as he held the money back out towards the blue-eyed man before him, so sure Saeki would feel insulted but not knowing what else to do since he only ever stole or conned when he was starving or in danger of his clothes falling apart at the seams, which he hadn't been since finding his current job. Okay, so maybe he was hungry a lot as clothes were expensive and he had to pay for his room, plus making sure the kids that slept beneath the abandoned building several blocks away had a bite to eat every now and again. Not to mention blankets and medicine when the weather turned cold.
The boy was like reading a billboard sign at the Crossing in Shibuya; ridiculously easy. All his thoughts were projected to Saeki and the vampire listened to every one of them. The wolf seemed like a decent enough guy and since he hadn’t had a reaction to him as a vampire yet, it made him wonder if this Rin character even knew what he was. But it sounded like he was right when it came to the blonde needing the money and because he was in a good mood over getting his curious dog back, Saeki was going to insist the money be taken. “Just take it. It could cover rent for a couple of months, stock your cupboards, buy new clothes. Hell, give it to charity or to orphans or the homeless if you want.”
Rin stared at the money in his hand, brow furrowed and nose wrinkled while he thought. The money really would come in handy and could pay for so much! His wayward thoughts that totally contradicted his morals made him squirm inside, until dark eyes lifted to the man that smelled oddly like that Shishido guy.
"Only if you let me work for it!" he insisted, chin setting in a stubborn angle and lips pursing. "I can do anything you want from cleaning to errands, or anything else you might need!"
Saeki raised one slender brow at the insistence the wolf pup kept returning before waving him off in annoyance. “I don’t need any extra help.” He had more than enough as it was if one considered he had an entire species following him within Tokyo to do as he asked of them. If one specified directly within the club, then he was technically down one waitress but with Shiraishi helping at the bar when he felt like it, it wasn’t like he was ready to beg some wolf that didn’t even know what he was and seemed suspicious of everyone to come work for him.
Then again, it seemed like the only way to get rid of Rin and have him take the money was to give him his way-or let him think he was getting his way. “Fine, leave me your number and if I ever need help with anything at all, I’ll call you.” What would it hurt to have a werewolf owing him a favour after all?
"Really?" Rin cried out, surprised and delighted by how easily Saeki went along with his desire to work for the money, instead of taking it like he was a charity case or something equally as hurtful to the pride most people weren't aware of him possessing. He grinned then, his lips curling into a brilliant smile of happy delight just seconds before he threw himself across the small distance that separated him from the total stranger his arms enveloped without permission.
If he mumbled his thank you into Saeki's shirt because he was too busy nuzzling his cheek into his chest then there really wasn't anything wrong with it. He was showing his appreciation in the best way of all, right?
“What the--?” Saeki was mildly confused and definitely shocked over the hug he was now a participant of. The man was skittish since they met and seemed to hate crowds and, the vampire had pegged, people but it seemed he was wrong on that last one. Or, maybe Rin just got a little too happy sometimes and liked to show his appreciation in grand gestures. As a guy who liked being a little touchy feely with certain people when he was being flirtatious, he could appreciate it and soon found himself instead of hugging in return, patting the wolf on the head as he was just too damn puppy-like for his own good.
“Not a problem. We don’t serve food here but if you want a couple of drinks, go on out to the bar and order whatever you want on me. Consider that the true payment for bringing back Bacardi and the money an advance for whenever I need you.” That seem well-worded and should please the boy.
"Thanks but I don't drink," Rin answered with that smile still beaming when he lifted his head into the slight strokes of Saeki's hand, thoroughly enjoying the patting though he wasn't aware of how brightly his eyes shone with each pet or how much his face glowed.
He was aware of how reluctant he was to step away from the hug, though. Which he told himself was silly, since he needed to jot down his number for Saeki before he left. "Do you have a pen and paper? I'll write my number down like you said and then go home, before it gets too late." If it got too late he'd be contending with a grumbling stomach all night long, which wasn't a pleasing prospect at all.
Saeki laughed lightly at the thoughts he caught but only nodded at the question he was asked as he rounded the desk again and produced a pen and a memo pad from a drawer. “Thank you again for returning my dog to me. It’s nice to know some people are still honest and trustworthy,” he wondered how many people would have died of shock or accused him of hypocrisy if they heard the vampire utter such words to a werewolf; hell in general.
Rin barely stopped the frown Saeki's words threaten to drag out of him. He wasn't honest, since he didn't go around telling people that he was dangerous. Briefly, he let his memories surface of waking up beside the childhood bully he'd beaten to death, or so he still believed since his young mind couldn't comprehend anything else but that when he saw the results of whatever he had done during a period of time when all his memories were blacked out after a certain point.
No, he wasn't honest. He just locked himself away from everyone so he wouldn't have the chance to do it again, like that time a few years back before he met his current employer when a guy had caught him in a back alley and rounded on him pissed off because he'd accidentally bumped into him making him spill his drink all over the shirt he wore. He didn't remember what happened then either, except he knew he had done something bad when he woke up to find his clothes gone and blood everywhere.
"You're welcome." He murmured, feeling his cheeks heat from the words of praise even as he silently swore to himself that he'd do everything he could to make sure he always stayed awake, aware, and very much in control while around Saeki. It wouldn't do to return the man's kindness by losing control and hurting him or his patrons, so that meant he really couldn't drink as alcohol led to a loss of control over his senses and his body, plus he needed to avoid the crowds themselves just in case there was some sort of trigger in something people did or said.
"Here you go!" he held out the paper and pen, his number hastily scrawled across it with his name flamboyantly written out above it. "Call any time." The werewolf hastily cried over his shoulder as he turned away, already heading for the door to put into practice his new determination to protect Saeki before he did something weird or odd that would alert his new (sort of) employer to the fact that he'd just hired an insane person to help him out when he needed an extra hand.
Saeki grinned at the interesting memories and thoughts running through Rin’s mind so clearly that it felt like the vampire was there when they originally happened. This shifter was worth looking further into to see how much of use he could be by the connections he had and even the past he was running from. A lot could be done with the boy if he started training him properly from the start and if and when Rin ever found out exactly what he was then he would be loyal to a vampire and would feel obligated to stay on the ‘wrong’ side of the battle out of honour that the puppy did have even if he didn’t believe it. It was easily instilled anyway given his strong power of suggestion and mind control.
Ah, yes, this wolf boy definitely earned a thorough looking into and the honour of not having his number tossed out but tucked into the pocket of expensive trousers. But out of sight and out of mind was something Saeki was good at and as soon as Rin was gone, the vampire crouched down and held out his hands. “C’mere, Sir Bacardi! I need to spoil you a little more.”
