His stomach was growling audibly and he knew either it, or his rummaging through the kitchen was going to wake his boyfriend. Ohtori frowned and put a note on the counter explaining that he was just going to find a snack and would be back before leaving their apartment. Walking several blocks and then a few more in another direction he saw the glow of a 24 hour store and smiled. It was a peaceful night, the air was strangely cold though, and it made his fingers, nose and ears almost hurt. Stepping inside, he started to gather a number of chocolate sweets, meat snacks and a few convenient combi-meals while humming to himself. He hates those stores normally, the hum of the coolers and muttering people bothered his ears, tonight it seemed to be only the coolers.

Niou watched the young kid walk into the store and didn't think much of it as he gathered up his various snacks. The night had been rather slow, and he was getting bored. There was a slight scent that seemed familiar to him to him, but Niou didn't pay much attention to it. "Hey, kid, are you really going to eat all that yourself?" He asked, figuring he might as well talk to him. There wasn't much else to do.

Looking up over a display at the man near the register, he looked at the number of items he was holding and thought a moment. He was a growing teenaged boy. They normally ate a lot, right? And he was also not exactly human and it was getting unseasaonably frigid...so maybe it was a wolf thing too. Had Ohtori not been so distracted with his snack hunting he might have noticed a reckognizable scent surrounding him, but no. "Yeah- I have a bit of an appetite."

"Obviously." Niou snorted. "So what are you doing out this time of night? Don't you know there are scary things out there?" He grinned, maybe he got a gullible one for once.

Scary things? Ohtori tried hiding an amused smile as he set his multitudes of food on the counter and shook his head. "I'm just a night person- and there can't be anything that scary out." Aside from vampires and himself, of course.

Niou shook his head. "What, are you a vampire or something?" He asked jokingly, knowing that wasn't the case. He would have been able to smell it if he was. Now that the kid was closer, Niou could smell it. It wasn't heavy, but it was the scent of a another were. Niou went about his job, deciding to ignore it for the moment.

Another smile crossed Ohtori's lips, taking the joke well. "I'd be a dead vampire- I don't think they live on sweets." There was something nagging him in the back of his mind but he just couldn't quite put his finger on it yet...

Niou laughed. "No, they tend to like blood." He said as he sacked up the food and announced the total to the kid. "Still, there are other things that could get you."

Digging in his wallet, his nose twitched. Mint and Musk. Trying to keep his head down and heart rate as low as he could he started counting out the money. "I suppose that's true."

Niou just chuckled, and leaned forward a bit, trying not to be too obvious as he sniffed. Yup, the kid was another one. He didn't have the scent of a pack on him though. All the better in Niou's mind. "Very true." He said, but relaxed a bit. "Something wrong, kid?"

"No no. I'm good." He stopped fiddling with the cash and carefully handed over a debit card. He'd heard there were others like him around but aside from Renji, he'd never really noticed them. He just hoped he wasn't going to be hurt.

"Really? You don't look like it." Niou asked as he swiped the card. "You're nervous all of a sudden."

Ohtori swallowed and tried harder to calm himself, damning his sweating palms leaving marks on the counter. "I'm fine, really." It felt like ages waiting for the reader to scan his card. He had to get out of there.

Niou grinned a little as he handed the card back to the kid. "of course." He said. He was enjoying toying with him a little.

Now he was waiting for a sheet to sign and then he could run away, he just hoped he wasn't being overly twitchy. He did a pretty good job covering his scent usually so he hoped that at this point he was just being paranoid.

Niou slid the paper over to the kid for him to sign. It was back to being bored soon. "Hey, kid?"

Signing the paper quickly, he handed it back and reached for his bags, freezing as he was spoken to again. "Yes?"

"Do yourself a favor. First, that cologne is definitely not you. Second, stay away from the packs. They're worse than gangs." Niou offered.

"Oh uhm- thanks..." He chews his lower lip a moment in thought before opting to speak up again, "I'm not pack affiliated...are you in a pack? I- I sort of prefer keeping to myself."

"Smart kid." Niou laughed, mostly to himself. "Nah. Too much competition. I got out while I could. Should have never joined up with them in the first place. Just try not to get caught up in this silly war. And you're entirely alone - I can smell another's scent on you." Niou grinned.

"War?" Ohtori frowned and looked at him worriedly. Things have been smelling strange enough lately, like vampires mostly. He blushed faintly and looked at the floor, "my partner."

Niou smirked a little. "Ah. And don't worry about it if you don't know what's going on. It's better if you don't."

"But...that's important. This isn't going to be bad is it?" He and Renji had peaceful lives, worked hard and caused no trouble...a war was the last thing they were looking for.

"If you want to go after witches and vampires, that's your business. And it's probably not as bad as it seems. Just watch out for them - they might get you first. And then what would you do?" Niou asked. "Trust me, I wouldn't sell out one of my own kind. Just watch your back and don't trust anyone."

"Oh no....nothing like that at all. We just try to lead normal lives, so it should be okay. I'm...Ohtori by the way."

"Good to hear it. The name's Niou." If the kid wasn't going offer his whole name, he wasn't either. "Good luck with being 'normal.'" Niou offered, chuckling a little.

"Seems like we're pretty good at the normal thing. You too." He gathered the bags quickly and grinned. "Good luck to you too."

Niou shook his head, waving the kid off. This really was going to be interesting.
