Dying and coming back was not unlike returning home after a long time away only to discover that moths had infested your clothes; you could fumigate but the clothes still had holes in them. Not that Kon had had a lot of experience with moths, but he was pretty sure that was how it was. You didn't need to have a high school education to know that moths were bad news, and Kon didn't need to be around for the last year to know that everything had changed.

It sucked.

There was a difference between knowing that everything must have changed and learning that everything had changed. Some things were still the same: American football was still the best, Batman was still a jerk, Superman was still that impossibly aloof ideal.

Some things changed a lot.

Take Tim for example. The Tim Kon had known before would have smiled wryly at his metaphor, asking whether he really wanted to say his friend was like a old, moth-ridden coat left in the attic, waving a hand in amused dismissal as Kon protested that of course he didn't mean it like that. Then Kon would make some funny remark and Tim would look at him soberly and tell him that now was not the time. Both of them knew that Tim was biting the inside of his mouth in an effort not to laugh.

The new Tim would stare at him hungrily at times, when he thought that Kon didn't notice. There was no repressed laughter in this new Tim, only lost dreams and hidden secrets.

A Robin, Tim had told him once, was to be the light that Batman couldn't be. That's why Robin wore red and green and yellow; if Batman was to be the terror of the night, Robin was the promise of the morning. Kon had laughed at this and sent Tim to bed, telling him that his very serious Bat things would wait until it was daylight. Tim pouted (a moment that Kon will treasure forever), but did as he was told.

The new Robin was the antithesis of everything Tim said a Robin was about. Kon considered it a great public service that he hadn't given fake-Robin the welcome he'd given the last Robin to take Tim's position away. Kon tried to like him, as much as he could like someone who tried to kill his best friend. After all, he could tolerate Rose, and she'd tried to kill his ex-girlfriend.

He still disliked the new, fake Robin. Every time he saw him wearing Tim's colors he wanted to yell at him to stop playing dress up and give it back to the real hero. The Teen Titans weren't a replacement for Young Justice at all, and nothing felt right anymore. The only way it'd be right was if they got the old team back together, and that'd be impossible.

When Cassie said that fake Robin would be staying on the team instead of Tim, Kon swallowed his anger long enough to take her aside. Then he quit. Smallville had enough work for a junior hero anyway.

"And then you broke up," Kara finished. It seemed kind of weird, talking to Kara about these things. When Kon had left, she'd been unsettled and uncomfortable with who she was. Now, despite all that had happened, she was far more comfortable in her skin. He envied that ease, though he wondered why she had cut her hair that short. She'd just tucked it behind her ears for easily the fortieth time that hour. "Good."

Kon stared at her.

"You hurt her when ... you know. Everything. It's not your fault; it never is when someone dies. But they're still gone." Kon remembered that while the deaths of everyone in New Krypton was a mind-bogglingly high statistic to him, to Kara they were friends and family.

She raised her hand as he opened his mouth to speak. "Look, baby cousin. She needs some time. So do you."

Kon wanted to ask, time for what? Instead he grinned. "When did you get so wise, huh?"

"Someone has to, to balance you out."

Kon maintained afterward that the only thing stopping her from getting slugged in the arm was the arrival of the best hotcakes Smallville had to offer. Kara poked her tongue out and retorted that he could try.

As he walked back to the Kents, Kon found himself wondering whether everyone was going to grow up and leave him behind. It wasn't a comforting thought.

Finding Tim was surprisingly hard, even if you had heat vision, x-ray vision and were really, really awesome. Which, of course, Kon was. But Tim was ridiculously hypervigilant and competent, so Kon didn't take it too badly when instead of finding Tim, Tim found him instead.

"You're a long way from Smallville," Tim said from the shadows. Kon just rolled his eyes.

"The shadow trick doesn't work anymore, you know. Totally unimpressed."

"Uh huh. That's why your heart rate jumped. Trick of the light." There was a pause. "I heard you quit the Teen Titans."

Kon shrugged. "It was too far away from Smallville. I have things to do. School, even! Me, at school!" He was pretty sure Gotham's pervasive shadows were judging him, so he went on in a rush. "But it's not so far away from Gotham. You can come and visit - it's pretty close if you do that train riding thingy you do."

"Is that an invitation?" Tim sounds confused - has it been so long since anyone invited Tim to do anything fun? Kon decided then and there that if he could lure Tim away from Gotham, they were going to do all the fun things he could find in Smallville, even if he had to make some of them up. Anything to get rid of that confused edge to Tim's words.

"Yeah, if you can keep up," he offers instead. Tim's response was to fall out of the shadows overhead and land neatly on his feet. Kon notes with smug pride that despite Tim's very late growth spurt, Kon's still taller.

"Sure, why not?"

It's hard to tell underneath Red Robin's cowl, but Kon can tell that Tim's smiling.

That, at least, hadn't changed.

jfkgvsdfjk uwah This is amazing. I especially love Kon's voice in here, because it's perfect and it makes so much sense. ♥ I have a weak spot for Batman and the Super family in general, so this makes me so, so happy. Thank you, I love Kon way too much.
