Wireless Amber Alerts to your Cell for free!!!

I encourage you to sign up to receive AMBER Alerts on your cell phone.  Why?

The first three hours after a child's abduction are the most critical to recovery efforts.  This statistic was the driving force behind the creation of the AMBER alerts program, an early response system that began in 1997 using radio as its primary delivery method.  AMBER stands for “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response” and it was named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year old girl who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle and then murdered.  The program has helped reunite more than 260 children with their families.

Wireless AMBER Alerts are text messages that are sent out to subscribers as soon as local law enforcement releases an AMBER Alert.  Important information about the child or any known information about the abductors or the vehicle is included.  Anyone capable of receiving text messages and whose wireless carrier is a participant in the program can sign up to receive Wireless AMBER Alerts.  About 70% of Americans would be eligible.

The Wireless Foundation initiated and oversees the Wireless AMBER Alerts program and other philanthropic programs that utilize wireless technology to help American communities.  In addition to the participating wireless carriers, the Wireless AMBER Alerts Initiative required the cooperation of many organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Syniverse Technologies, and the US Department of Justice.  The Public Service Announcements are designed to educate the public about the program, inspire them to sign up for the alerts, and most importantly, increase the number of people who may be able to help in locating an abducted child.

Please sign up to receive alerts on your personal cell phones at www.wirelessamberalerts.org.   If you only need to receive Amber Alerts and not any other text messages, there will be no additional charge from the wireless providers.  The only requirement is that your phone cannot have any restrictions to prevent the receipt of text messages.  The Wireless AMBER Alerts site provides information about how Wireless AMBER alerts work, partners, the campaign, answers to frequently asked questions, their privacy statement, and terms of use.
