There is a thread on SomethingAwful going on right now about having your save files on games getting fucked up by forces of nature/bratty kids/small children who don't know any better. So I was wondering if any of you guys had any stories about similar experiences. I have two majors ones:

1. My friend and I are doing some hot shit dual memorycarding in PSOGCN. For those not in the know, you have to do is copy character data from one card into a "temp" file on the other card before you're allowed to play together. After you're done you can transfer it back.

Anyways, me and my LV108 FOmarl with like a hundred hours sunk into her were beating up bitches on my friend's game. At the end of the afternoon, I proceed to transfer her back into my card when... *whirrrrrrrrrrrrr... click click*

The GameCube freezes. Horrified, we reload the game to discover that my temp character file had vanished entirely and my permanent file was stuck in "abroad" mode. Thankfully, PSO lets you cancel your abroad status (unlike a certain Final Fantasy game)... and she was still LV108 with the playtime still intact, but all my rare items, armor, and mags were completely deleted. My overall attack strength never recovered from that.

2. Shorter story. I donated most of my SNES games to temple so the kids there could play them. One day I booted up Donkey Country 2 to find that my 100% file had been deleted. I literally spent years of my childhood doing all of that.
