Jaejoong slipped his phone back into his satchel and stepped out onto the sidewalk.
"Times New Roman"">He knew he was smiling and somewhere in the back of his mind he wondered if he should be but he ignored the niggling question for now. He took a deep breath of the fresh, brisk air and held it in for a few extra seconds. He liked the feel of the chill coursing down his throat. There was something about it that made him feel alive.
"Times New Roman"">He’d just left his lawyer’s office and after a brief stop at the post office to check his mail, he’d go to his hotel room and enjoy a nice, quiet dinner. His mind briefly wandered to Maya and he felt a momentary sense of loss and worry at not having her with him but he didn’t want her there for this particular meeting so he’d left her with the family down the street. She was young but she might have heard something that would disturb her and that was the last thing he wanted. Hearing anything concerning the possibility of her father’s death would be terrifying for any child.
"Times New Roman"">He’d gone to draft his will, a scary thing for anyone to have to do. The average person his age didn’t have such worries but he didn’t have the luxury. Everything he had would automatically go to Maya: there was already a fund in her name and she was the sole beneficiary of his monetary and material holdings. What he wanted to ensure was Maya’s physical well-being. He’d assigned guardianship to his parents, his older sister being the other option if they were unable to assume responsibility for some reason. He just wanted to make sure that she remained in South Korea. It wasn’t meant as a slight against her Swedish grandparents, he fully intended for her to continue to have a relationship with them and had made provisions for such, but it was important that she stay in his home country. He’d considered canceling her dual citizenship but didn’t want to go down that road unless he absolutely had to.
"Times New Roman"">Taking a deep breath, he let it out slowly. At times like this he wished that he had someone to talk to. His parents worried for him enough as it was so he didn’t want to burden them with his worries. If they knew what he’d just done, they’d insist he move back to his hometown and he knew he wouldn’t, couldn’t, so he tried his best to avoid that conversation at all costs. Until Daniel was dealt with permanently, he wouldn’t even so much as visit them. Again, he was thankful that Daniel wasn’t violent, at least not towards anyone else but him. Daniel knew where his family lived and one sure way to get him out in the open was to threaten the ones he loved.
"Times New Roman"">There was Yunho but…
"Times New Roman"">He shook his head. He couldn’t think about that right now.
"Times New Roman"">Striding down the hall of the post office, Jaejoong forced his thoughts towards something more pleasant.
"Times New Roman"">He was standing in front of his P.O. Box flipping through his mail while he pondered what to have for dinner when he saw a flash out of the corner of his eye. Glancing up quickly, he stared back the way he’d come but saw nothing and no one. Nonetheless, the hair on the back of his neck rose immediately.
"Times New Roman"">It could have been some random person walking by, he told himself. He couldn’t afford to get spooked at every little thing.
"Times New Roman"">Chanting that over and over, he turned back to the envelopes in his hands. When he came to the last one, his stomach sank. Without opening it, he knew what it was.
"Times New Roman"">Movements slow, he opened the envelope and withdrew the photos. They were the usual: pictures from the last time he and Maya had been to the city, the same day Yunho had taken them home. For a second he worried about whether Daniel had followed him to the police station but he breathed a sigh of relief when Yunho didn’t appear in any of the photos. He was positive he would have if Daniel had seen them together. When he came to the last photo, his heart froze.
"Times New Roman"">It was a picture of himself. Red sweater, black jeans, his favorite pair of sunglasses resting atop his head while he browsed through the selection in front of a DVD display. He wouldn’t have been concerned but for one little detail:
"Times New Roman"">He was looking at himself as he was dressed today.
"Times New Roman"">He’d walked through the mall while he killed time before his meeting with the lawyer and had stopped in a DVD store to buy a movie for Maya and himself.
"Times New Roman"">Slowly, he turned the photograph over. He didn’t know why he did, none of the previous photos had had anything written on it, but something urged him to.
mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"">Smile.
"Times New Roman"">“Oh, God,” he breathed. It was really starting all over again.
"Times New Roman"">He looked up in the direction where he’d seen the flash before and gasped when he saw a hooded figure disappearing around the corner.
mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"">Oh, no you don’t!
"Times New Roman"">Slamming the mail box closed, he stuffed the envelope and photos into his open satchel and started walking quickly, tempted to run but restraining himself so as not to draw attention.
"Times New Roman"">He was tired. So far he’d been reactive, waiting for something to happen and organizing his life accordingly when it did. He needed to be proactive now. He couldn’t keep running, couldn’t keep uprooting himself and Maya. Wasn’t that why he’d gone to the police in the first place? Why he’d had the will drawn up? He didn’t want to be afraid anymore. He would stand his ground and let whatever happened happen. And he’d be prepared, whatever it took. He wasn’t seeing things and he knew that it was only a matter of time before Daniel stopped playing hide-and-seek and exposed himself.
"Times New Roman"">He raced through the post office, trying his best to keep sight of a covered head far in front of him, but when he hit the sidewalk, he stopped.
"Times New Roman"">There were hooded figures everywhere, faces obscured by scarves and umbrellas. After a week or nothing but sun, why did today have to be the day that the rain fell?
"Times New Roman"">Defeat swamped him and he felt incredibly drained. Stumbling back into the shelter of the building, he pulled out his cell phone and typed a single word.
“Spooked.”
