Don't you know it's gonna BE... Alllllriiiiight...

I had written a long post about how I'd realized that I wasn't living life in the moment, but was assuming I'd enjoy life after graduation, and that this is bad. Studying the book of Ecclesiastes (authored by Qoheleth) in Poetic and Wisdom Lit class helped catalyze these thoughts. Then I realized "Wait, Tom wrote about this very thing in HIS xanga like two years ago." I thought his thoughts were profound then and still think so, and this refresher was something I needed. So I'll sum up my post here: I resolved to change my attitude again; I'd rather seek to enjoy school via the "love of knowledge" that Proverbs frequently encourages, rather than wait to enjoy myself till I'm not in school. I know God's capable of changing my attitude about studying and that I've seen people who are happy as a result of their loving knowledge this way. Indeed, Qoheleth says that the ABILITY to enjoy one's work comes from God, and it's comforting to know that even that is in God's hands. I'd rather find enjoyment in my work than see it as an obstacle, and I'd rather enjoy the present than expect only to enjoy myself in the future.

In the end, I'd be even better off to cut short my self-analysis before it turns into morbid self-centeredness. "The unexamined life is not worth living," according to Socrates, but as our Wisdom Lit prof told us, Qoheleth would argue that the over-examined life is not worth living either! So... these thoughts helped me relax during Thanksgiving Break, and hopefully I'll be able to apply them for the rest of my life.

Woo! So Qoheleth is right: there's nothing new under the sun, even on xanga! Some other quote comes to mind: "People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed." I guess a dude named Samuel Johnson said that one. You said it, Sam! I often forget how important it is to live in the present. Praise God for his reminding me!
