Was he playing poorly? I didn't catch any of his matches. Hopefully the win in Brazil will boost his confidence and get him really back on track.

Sadly, yes. As well as his normal lack of confidence, Rafa's not moving well, he loses his first serve for chunks of the matches and even his forehands aren't clearing the net too often for comfort. He's got a lot of work to do.
