“I’m the only man in the world with a marriage license made out to ‘To Whom It May Concern.’”
-ACTOR MICKEY ROONEY, WHO WAS MARRIED EIGHT TIMES
Prenuptial agreements are now an essential part of wealthy people’s marriages, especially those of celebrities. Actress Sally Field had a 39-page-long one drawn up before she married her now-ex husband.
“First God created man. Then he had a better idea.”
-ANONYMOUS
“All love that has not friendship for its base is like a mansion built upon the sand.”
-POET ELLA WHEELER WILCOX
A groom is supposed to wear in his buttonhole a flower of the same type that appears in the bride’s bouquet. It’s thought that this comes from the medieval tradition of a knight wearing his lady’s colors as a declaration of love.
“Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone; it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new.”
-URSULA K. LE GUIN, THE LATHE OF HEAVEN
DO WE REALLY HAVE TO INVITE HIM
TO THE WEDDING?
The ancient folktale “The Grateful Dead” (from which the rock band took its name) is about as bizarre as a love story can get: When a young man passes a corpse by the road, there’s a note on the dead man’s cloak explaining that he’s a debtor and until his debts are paid, he cannot be buried. So the young man uses his own money to settle the debts, and the corpse is finally put to rest. Later, the young man runs into a mysterious stranger who helps our hero become wealthy and meet and marry a beautiful princess with whom he has fallen in love. The stranger then reveals himself as the spirit of the grateful corpse.
“We are shaped and fashioned by what we love.”
-JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE
“When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and it’s longer than any hour. That’s relativity.”
-ALBERT EINSTEIN
“In passing . . . I would like to say that the first time Adam had the chance, he laid the blame on a woman.”
-LADY NANCY ASTOR
ALWAYS LEAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT
The largest wedding cake in history was made in 2001 in New York City by two restaurants working together. The cake weighed 1,530 pounds, was 9 feet tall, and included 230 pounds of flour and 400 pounds of marzipan and frosting-big enough, in other words, for the actual bride and groom to stand on top, had they wanted to.
“Find the person who will love you because of your differences and not in spite of them, and you have found a lover for life.”
-PSYCHOLOGIST LEO BUSCAGLIA
“Every heart has secrets.”
-YIDDISH PROVERB
“The loving are the daring.”
-BAYARD TAYLOR, “THE SONG OF THE CAMP”
“I can see from your utter misery, from your eagerness to misunderstand each other, and from your thoroughly bad temper, that this is the real thing.”
-ACTOR/WRITER/DIRECTOR PETER USTINOV
Despite his humble beginnings, Christopher Columbus managed to marry Felipa Perestrello e Moniz, whose family had influence at the Portuguese court. After her death, he formed a relationship with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana in Spain, whom he truly loved but never married, probably because she was a lowborn orphan with no social connections-which would have hurt his quest for noble status in the years before 1492.
“You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing an imperfect person perfectly.”
-LECTURER/CONSULTANT SAM KEEN
“A wife lasts only for the length of the marriage, but an ex-wife is there for the rest of your life.”
-WOODY ALLEN
“Gentlemen, to the lady without whom I should never have survived to eighty, nor sixty, nor yet thirty years. Her smile has been my lyric, her understanding the rhythm of the stanza. She has been the spring wherefrom I have drawn the words. She is the poem of my life.”
-OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES, IN A TOAST TO HIS WIFE
“After my marriage, she edited everything I wrote. And what is more-she not only edited my works-she edited me!”
-MARK TWAIN, OF HIS WIFE, LIVY
A ROSE BY ANY OTHER COLOR
Just so you don’t give the wrong impression: Red roses stand for love and passion, white roses express innocence and purity, yellow roses are a sign of joy and gladness, lavender roses symbolize love at first sight and enchantment, and coral roses convey desire.
